| New Retail Experience "Consumers are more time-pressed than ever, and the Bloom concept is based on providing a more convenient and hassle-free shopping experience," says Jeff Lowrance, corporate communications manager at Food Lion. "We looked at ways to take advantage of opportunities through new store concepts, and that's Bloom." The idea is to let consumers find goods quicker, get additional information and services and complete the payment process quicker. Lowrance says none of the technologies are exclusive to Bloom, but are unique in their combination. Customers are offered personal scanners for product information, information kiosks for recipes and wine advice, party planning and ordering, self-service produce scales that print checkout labels; and of course, self-service checkout. Managers carry Windows-powered tablet PCs, by which they can interact with customers, discover product availability and offer special orders, and check stocking information from anywhere in the store.
