| An Apple Tablet PC Quote:
The tablet would double up as a portable video machine, a sort of companion device to Apple's hot-selling iPod portable music players, several have suggested.
Last week the tablet reports gained new credence when the respected US computer industry observer and author Robert X. Cringely promoted the idea on his website, I Cringely.
Cringely — a nom de plume for writer Mark Stephens — is widely known as the author of Accidental Empires, possibly the best and most entertaining book yet on the history of the personal computer industry and the personal foibles of some of its leading personalities.
He followed that with Triumph Of The Nerds, a three-hour television documentary on the same subject.
He has always been an especially keen observer of Apple Computer and its enigmatic leader, Steven Jobs.
ThinkSecret.com, a US website devoted to ferreting out hush-hush developments at Apple, recently dismissed speculation about a forthcoming tablet — although this was before the Cringely revelations.
"As far as we are aware, Apple has no active development projects for a tablet-type device," ThinkSecret said.
"It does not plan to deviate from the basic computer types (pro tower, desktops, laptops, rackmount servers) for the foreseeable future.
"Apple has its eye on bringing small-company innovation to the mass markets, not mass-market innovation to the small markets." | Title: Tablet PC is grist to Mac rumour mills Source: Australian IT |
