| Re: Motion Computing Announces 8.4" Tablet The specifications of this new computer look so similar to what James Kendrick and I have been urging that updating my "Sweet-spot for Tablet Computers for People on the Go" page (www.segal.org/tablet/) today for the Motion Computing LS800 seemed like checking off the boxes. I began the page in November 2002, shortly after the Tablet PC launch, and imagine I'll retire the page and declare victory. I look forward to showing one of these computers at a medical conference. Last fall all the doctors told me that my Motion Computing M1300 slate was great but they wouldn't get one unless it would fit in their white coat pocket. For sales of these computers to really take off, makers of sport jackets will need to add a bigger pocket - sales will depend not only on software but also on softwear. | Re: Motion Computing Announces 8.4" Tablet At 256 MB of RAM, it is a little bit underpowered for Windows XP Pro and the Tablet PC Edition. Of course, the users can expand the RAM, but it is a shame it doesn't come with 512 MB standard. -- Chris H. | Re: Motion Computing Announces 8.4" Tablet Good point; sticking with the standard 256 MB memory is not a good idea. My guess is that they offer the 256 MB option to keep the base price under $2000, but one should always be skeptical about "as low as" prices. Add-ons such as keyboards are extra too, but one might imagine having only a few keyboards for a bunch of computers if users hardly ever use their keyboard (I've only used mine for system setup). | Re: Motion Computing Announces 8.4" Tablet FWIW, I ran through Motion's configuration checklist and added about the same extras I got with my M1400. The M1400 totaled out at a little over $2700, the LS800 come in at $3002.93. Smaller, yes, less expensive, not at all. | Re: Motion Computing Announces 8.4" Tablet The fairest comparison would be the newest models, the LE1600 and the LS800. I took the specs of the base version of the LE1600 ($2199) and reproduced them using options on the LS800 and the cost was slightly less ($2068). In the long run one would expect smaller computers to have significantly lower prices. As an example, the 12 inch Apple laptop costs 56% of the cost of the 17 inch model. However, this reflects mature production runs and such volume can take a while to develop, particularly since now doctors are the only ones with jacket pockets large enough for these computers. The clothing industry will catch up to doctors by making sport jackets with larger pockets, but they will drag their feet until they see big sales of these computers. It will happen, but it will take some time or some jump-starting. | RE: Motion Computing Announces 8.4" Tablet As it's a VGA (800x600) display, do you know if the Intel 915GMS will drive an XGA (1024x768) or greater exterenal display simultaneously? I checked the Intel site http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/915gms/ but it simply says "View two independent video sources when an external monitor or panel is connected to the notebook." The Motion site doesn't clarify either. It's good to see both the USB ports are v2 since my M1300 appears to have one USB1 and one USB2 port. | Re: Motion Computing Announces 8.4" Tablet I don't know, Mike, but I'm checking. I was at a show this weekend where the LS800 was debuted. The Motion booth was swamped the entire time and the interest in the LS800 was almost overwhelming. One thing I can say is that the 800x600 looks the same as the 1024x768 does on the LE1600 and other 12" models. Icons and text aren't any bigger. I'll post as soon as I get a good answer. terri "Mike Williams" <MikeWilliams@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A55B4EE1-9797-4E45-A168-A76215A4B229@microsoft.com... > As it's a VGA (800x600) display, do you know if the Intel 915GMS will > drive > an XGA (1024x768) or greater exterenal display simultaneously? | Re: Motion Computing Announces 8.4" Tablet I love that device not esp. as a personal favorite but because it realy enhances the possibilities/chances of the Tablet PC platform. Weight and size make it very interesting for specific markets. -- Mit besten Gruessen - Best wishes Stefen Niemeyer "terri" <support@thetabletpc.not> schrieb im Newsbeitrag news:ubjSZdvhFHA.328@tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl... >I don't know, Mike, but I'm checking. | Re: Motion Computing Announces 8.4" Tablet Hi, Mike, Just got an answer from Motion to yours as well as some other questions. "The LS800 will drive an external display with resolution up to 1600 X1200 in extended desktop mode or monitor mode." For my comment about resolution - "You can set the display to higher resolution but you will need to scroll. This is somewhat workable with a keyboard and mouse. It is unusable with a pen, however, since the pen digitizer does not translate to the new resolution.
