Laptop: Compaq tc1100

Building on its legacy tc1000 tablet PC, HP's stylish silver Compaq tc1100 has swapped a Transmeta Crusoe processor for a 1GHz Pentium M part, upped the memory to 512MB and added space for a 40GB hard disk drive. The 216x20x274mm (1.8kg) system also comes with a battery-free writing stylus, sturdier hinges and latches, and a detachable keyboard. If you're in the market for a tablet PC with good battery life, HP's compaq tc1100 is currently one of the best available.

This brings up a very interesting product life cycle question -- how long do Tablet PC products last in an industry used to fast product cycles?

Actually, the Tablet PC life cycle is very different from desktop computers. Products last longer and the 'new' generations do not appear every few weeks. This apparent slowness is only seen when compared to the last decade. However, if we go back to normal growth days (80s) then we'll see that products used to be on the market for years before being replaced with the newest product introductions.

I'm not sure whether this is good or bad. It's just different and may take some people time to adjust their thinking.

To answer the question about new product releases ... rumors suggest new products after the Service Pack 2 has been released and manufacturers can pre-load the new OS. This means late 4th quarter could be a target time -- however -- Comdex has been canceled and therefore it will be interesting to see how the tablet community responds.

Along that line, Lora, Loren, Peter, Linda, and many others have been discussing a tablet only gathering. This would be a great time for manufacturers to present their newest products and allow everyone to get a good sense of the product. So, I'll toss my hat in for a tablet only gathering to happen ... sooner than later.

Angry Tc1000

I was happy to see a TC post but unfortunately my first experience was very bad.
I bought the TC1000 (thinking it was the 1100) from Tiger Direct for $1400, pretty good price. I got the 512 ram, docking station, batteried pen etc. Pulled it out of the box and fired her up to find that then OS was not installed properly (gui window) so I had to reload. There started my tale.
I was unable to ever work on the thing for a set period of time because it would lock up at varying intervals. Had to use the battery as an on/off switch. I sent it back and all they did was reformat the hard drive which I could have done and still no better. I was hoping the SP2 would help out but alas I couldn't stay connected long enough.
Anyway a long story short, it sits until a new one is available from Tiger because they are back ordered. I would have to say that I wasn't all that impressed with it because it never worked. I like the lay out but am thinking about going Fujitsu and would like any comments you have.

Todd

I love my TC1100. So I really think you should wait on the backordered product.

However, I also like Motion's machine with a hardtop keyboard as well as the Fujitsu. Pretty much any slate device with a readily accessible keyboard.
