When you start the computer in Safe Mode, what do you get?

Re: hp tc 1100 checkerboatd problem when start up

I'm sorry but your message is not clear so my answer is based on an assumption that you entered safe mode.

Per instructions, you turned on the machine, pressed the F8 key immediately, and entered safe mode. However, the screen was already checkerboarded as soon as you turned on the machine - in other words - before the operating system was loaded you could not see what was happening. If this is the case then your hardware is bad. This is not a software issue. Instead, you will need to contact a place that can repair the system. I'm sorry for the bad news.

If, on the other hand, you start the machine and can read what is on the screen and once the OS loads then you have problems reading the screen - please boot the system into safe mode - please re-read the directions provided in the link earlier so that you can determine if the challenge you have is a driver issue.

Best of luck.

Re: hp tc 1100 checkerboatd problem when start up

I managed the purchase and support of 20 TC1100's, and in the first three years we had them fielded I encountered this issue with 4 devices. It starts as an occasional occurence after rebooting, but eventually comes up 100% of the time when starting the computer. The checkerboard display will also be present in the BIOS configuration screen, and has nothing to do at all with the Windows Operating System - it's a hardware issue. The plug in jack that connects the keyboard to the tablet also takes a lot of stress from leaning the monitor up and down, and eventually can crack the motherboard right at the video card connection. The only fix for this is to call HP and have them replace the motherboard. This issue is a standard knowledge base scenario for them now (it wasn't for the first two tablet's that I had break, but eventually they figured out it was a common issue and told their help desk folks about it).

HP's main support document for this issue can be found here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...ctID=c00289731

On the good side, every device I have sent to HP for this problem has returned in two days - but they did wipe the hard drives every time.

Good luck!

Re: hp tc 1100 checkerboatd problem when start up

All,
I am currently experiencing a similar problem. I bought my tc1100 just under 3weeks ago from eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace. Reading through this thread has left me with the following concerns.
(1) Does this mean that every owner of tc1100 should look forward to this problem.
(2) Does HP charge for correcting this hardware design flaw.
(3) How do I contact HP, I spent about 2 hours yesterday trying to get something concrete.

Regards
Ola
