[HOWTO]: Choose the Right Tablet PC

Congratulations on deciding to purchase a Tablet PC. Now you need to figure out which is the best one for you and where to purchase it.

(1) Which Tablet PC is best for you?

Start by choosing the primary purpose of the machine. Mine is a desktop replacement that must carry all of my lesson plans, powerpoint presentations, lectures in MS Word, grades, and reflections. You might only want to use yours during traveling times or while you are away from the office. Many executives use their Tablet PCs during meetings because handwriting is less "rude" than typing ... click click click ...

Next, check out the Tablet PC Comparison Chart on this site. It has now been viewed over 10,000 times.

Narrow down your choices and then talk to current owners of the models. You may check in the Vendor Forums too and see what others are posting about their Tablet PCs.

Recommendations
Screen resolution: Toshiba M20x
Screen size & DVD: Acer C303
Battery life: Electrovaya
Outdoor/Indoor: Motion M1400
Price: Averatec C3500

(2) Where should you purchase it?
Depending on your country, you should first try your favorite reseller. Second would be to search online resellers. Make sure that you check their reputations for after-sales support. Finally, several companies offer their products direct to the consumer. I'll try to compile this information in this post. If you know of a good place then make sure that you post it in this thread. I'll add it as soon as possible.

Resellers
ESC Technologies

Buy Direct
Electrovaya
Motion Computing
Toshiba Direct

Note: I know a lot of people try to use e-bay. However, I cannot recommend this as a means to owning a Tablet PC. The cost is simply too great for the time and effort. My time is more valuable than trying to save a nickel and end up with someone else's junk.

Thumbs up Your comparison file

Hi,

This is a great tool. Really good idea. Since you were seeking feedback, a couple of points are:

1) Do you have results back yet on 2004 best tablet PC poll?

2) I am interested in the new Fujitsu 4010 TPC, but I did not notice it on the file.

3) I'm not sure whether I want to get a plain laptop, slate TPC or a convertible, so it would be really helpful to have some sort of I-O tool which addresses the comparative advantages of each, and the circumstances in which each would be most appropriate. So it could have a weighting for each of a row of variables like "will you carry it across town more than twice a day?", "do you use MS Word for more than x% of the time spent on your laptop?", "do you attend meeting for more than x% of your working day?", "how much HD space do you need?" and so forth.

Hey,

I've been a little more than behind on this comparison chart. Your suggestions are great and hopefully I can add them soon. The weighting idea is a great one.

There are not enough results from the 2004 poll to be taken seriously. I kinda hid this poll after the talk about having a CES poll spanning several sites. Maybe it's time to take it out of hiding.
