Tablet PC Terms

Alpha: Software is developed in stages. The first stage available to developers is called alpha. The second stage is a beta. Release Candidates may also become available during the development cycle
Beta: See Alpha Definition
CD: Compact Disc, synonymous with a disc or a drive unit
CDR: Compact Disc Recording device, required to create your own CD
CPU: Central Processing Unit, the processor or brains of the TPC
Digital ink, your handwriting recorded by the Tablet PC
Digitizer, device responsible for allowing you to write on the screen of the TPC, active and passive digitizers are available.
EMR Pen: Electromagnetic Resonance Pen, similar to an electronic pen or stylus
HD: Hard Drive, permanent storage device for the Tablet PC
Journal: Windows Journal
Lonestar: MS Codename for Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
Longhorn: The next full version release of Windows, to be available in 2006 or later
MS: Short for the company Microsoft
OS: Operating System
PC: Personal Computer
RAM: Random Access Memory, temporary memory for the computer. The greater the number the better the performance.
RC1: Release Candidate 1
SP2: Windows XP Service Pack 2
TIP: Tablet Input Panel, an onscreen keyboard plus digital ink converter (available in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition)
TPC: Tablet PC, MS version of an pen-enabled notebook
VA: View Anywhere

Internal optical drive: A CD-ROM, DVD, CD-RW/DVD, or DVD+-RW drive that is installed inside the Tablet PC. It may be fixed or modular. You can pop modular drives in and out at your convenience.

The shape of Tablet PCs are usually referred to in three ways:

Slate: You pick up what looks just like a thin display, but it is actually the entire computer and fully functional on its own. You can "grab and go". The keyboard can physically be separated and left behind.
Convertible: Looks just like a traditional notebook PC, except the display rotates around and flips over so you can handwrite on a flat surface.
Hybrid: This is more of a sales term for Slate designs that sell with a very mobile keyboard. The slate generally "snaps" into the keyboard dock.
