Angry No pen movement at all

Hi, i have a gateway m275. a few weeks ago it started responding eratically to the pen, ie the pointer would jump around instead of moving smoothly. i went through the motions with gateway and ended up having to send it in for repair. i got it back last week and it worked fine for about 5 days. now it wont respond to the pen at all. the touchpad still works fine. i uninstalled the wacom pen driver then reinstalled it, that didnt work. nothings changed software wise since the time it worked and then stopped. i just wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions of something i should try before i have to call gateway, yet again.

Hi,

Sorry to read about the problems with your Gateway.

What version of the Tablet PC OS is loaded?
Do you know what Gateway did to get the pen motion working again?
Have you done a fresh installation of the OS?

Just curious, how does the pen work in safe mode?

Please let us know.

Go ahead and follow up with Gateway. It could be software, power, pen, etc. Since you have an open trouble ticket with them, the first place to start is to find out what failed before.

Let us know.

I know this is way late, but just for the record:

It's a known problem with the M275 Tablet PC. The engineer from Taiwan came up to our campus and showed us the embarassing fix.

What happens is that over time, a misplaced piece of metal can make contact with the Tablet's digitizer, and short it out. Simply placing a barrier in between (Mylar Tape) will resolve the issue, but it requires opening the screen enclosure. It's really easy, about 5-10 minutes to fix if you have the tape and tools. But I don't recommend it for a beginner.

If someone needs it, I could possibly provide a link to how to fix this, including video, if it is still on our webservers.

This is music to the ear. I have M275, and I can't write on the screen anymore, called Gateway support and they are just too expensive just to ship it back and look at it. Did all the restoration, driver reinstallation, sp2 upgrade, replace the stylus pen, still have the same problem. Your posting sound like something that I would and comfortable doing. Please send, if you still have, the URL link or cheat sheet how to do the quick fix. Thanks, John

It's been too long to get the link, but I'll do what I can from memory.

Generally, gateway just replaced the screen for us for free though...

Under the tablet, remove the 4 screws that hold the screen base.

Remove the piece that holds the buttons by the base of the screen (Sorry, I don't have a tablet here to get better descriptions).

Unhook the connections of power and display from the screen, remove the screws, and lift off the screen unit. Remember the direction of each connector as you unhooked it.

Remove the screw covers on the bezel of the screen. Then, split apart the plastic bezel.

On a flat surface, preferably with a towel, lay the screen face down on the towel. In what now would be the upper right hand corner, there should be a screw or two. Remove them, and there should be the digitizer, right at the edge. Place a small section of mylar tape in between the digitizer circuit board and the other metal.

Reassemble.

Apologize for the choppy instructions. It's been about 15 months since I had to repair one, and I left that institution.

Gateway should replace the screen though for nothing as a recall.

Angry Gateway CX2620 Pen Doesn't work

Hi, I just got my laptop from an ebay seller today. Unfortunately, the pen doesn't work. The computer recognizes the movement and shows a pointer, but, as far as touch screen and writing....nothing.

Does this mean I have the same problem as posted here or could it be just replacing the stylus pen?

M.

Re: No pen movement at all

All,
There is DEFINITELY A PEN IN THE CX2620 stylii. I just replaced mine with a AAAA battery. The old one (which is a AAAA size, you can find these inside 9-volt batteries) had acid buildup on its positive end and that is why the pen went inactive. There is a lot of debate over this pen problem and I guarantee 90% of the time it's related to the battery. I can do a clean replace on anybody's CX2620 pen/stylii with a fresh battery for $10. If interested email me at kevinteman********.com or reply to this message. You pay for shipping, your total about $17 or so. I have never done this before but I just replaced mine flawlessly so I can do others. I know there are a lot of dead stylii out there and people don't know what to do, took me a while to figure it out.

Thanks,
Kevin Teman
