Tablet PC Schools: Catching Up

Here are several links related to Tablet PC schools I missed sharing while traveling and attending to family matters. I hope they help you stay informed and to participate in the emerging use of Tablet PCs by students and educators.

Lora posted a working list of case studies involving the use of Tablet PCs in schools and universities. Some of these focus on teachers using Tablet PCs for instruction, students using them in the classroom, and others in one-to-one computing environments. Let her know about your project or one she missed by someone else, so the list stays current for the rest of us to use.

Seith wants to know how many teachers use Tablet PCs. Please consider responding to his inquiry.

Lenovo puts a new spin on the ThinkPad Tablet PC. Lenovo announced on November 4, 2006, the ThinkPad X60 Tablet, a new convertible tablet PC marking a technology trifecta for innovation, portability and performance — with two new screen choices and other innovative Lenovo features, such as dynamic screen rotation. Now there are more choices for teachers to make. The new 12-inch MultiView indoor/outdoor, anti-reflective/anti-glare display, dramatically helps increase viewability in multiple environments. Ain't it great!

Author, inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil was guest for the recent three hour In Depth interview on CSPAN's BookTV.org. His companies have made major breakthroughs in print, sound and speech recognition technologies. He comments several times about coming technologies that will impact schooling and education in ways not yet imagined by most people. This is a must see episode for educators intending to prepare today's students for life tomorrow (including literally tomorrow when they leave school as well as within the next several years). I know, we all have things to do without listening to a TV interview. But this episode illustrates how many of us will have to change rapidly what we do in classes in order to avoid damaging our students' options for health, wealth, and safety. His optimism is contageous and your students will appreciate you telling them what products he knows are on the way. Kurzweil offers a context for your request for your school to allow teachers and students to use mobile PCs promptly.
