Computing students at the University of Ulster's Magee campus went wireless this year with the introduction of Tablet PCs. Students can connect to the Internet anywhere within Derry City's walls.

Lecturer in computing, Maeve Paris, said: "These innovative PCs mean that students can learn on the go, they can study anywhere, anytime. Teamed with smart classrooms and wireless hotspots across campus, these mobile computers offer our students a truly interactive mobile learning experience."

Every first-year student in the School of Computing and Intelligent Systems's single honours and major courses will receive a Tablet PC to help them through their studies.

This venture is part of the Wireless Campus initiative, a major Intelligent Systems Research Centre project, funded by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment under the European Union Building Sustainable Prosperity programme.

The funding source of this campus initiative is interesting. Note the key words: enterprise, trade, investment, sustainable prosperity. Sounds like serious, hardnose business-political competitors are making sure campuses catch up with available technologies. Great idea.
