| Digital Divide to Digital Continuum Michael Cohen and Ira Sockowitz, both of Ready to Learn partnership, will take questions live on the findings and implications of the new study Children, Families, & Media: A Benchmark. The report presents findings from a recent survey about ownership and use of media in lives of 2 to 8 year old children and their caregivers in the U.S. The study surveyed a national sample of 1601 caregivers. The report represents Phase One of a multi-year stdudy to address significant gaps in knowledge about media in households. Findings include: Households at all income levels participate in media ownership. Access equals ownership. Participation includes the full range of media content and technologies. Differences exist in the incidence of ownership by income level for many media. Mature technologies such as television and cable enjoy near universal penetration. Caregivers use owned media nearly identically. Most caregivers engage in basic literacy learning activities with their children regularly. These data speak to differences between facts and speculations among educators about household preparation of young children for schools.
