Tablet PCs at American School of Bombay

Every student at American School of Bombay (ASB) (grades 6 to 12) during the 2007-2008 academic year is required to use a Tablet PC with specifications defined by the school to fit their IT infrastructure. They encourage parents to purchase these through ASB.

Handheld computing defines the current wave in the evolution of technology. It symbolizes the idea of anytime/anywhere learning and has changed the face of the world of business, medicine, and other professions.

Students may choose either a Toshiba Portege M400 (Model No. PPM40L-1XG02V) Tablet PC or a Fujitsu Lifebook T4215 Tablet PC installed with Microsoft Windows XP Professional Operating System, Tablet PC Edition, Microsoft Office 2007 Professional (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access), and Microsoft FrontPage 2007, Microsoft Journal and OneNote 2007.

Both Tablet PC models have a 12" display, are in the mid 4lb range, and have at least an 80GB hard drive.

Tablet PCs extend the possibilities of notebook computers and adds an important set of functions without detracting from the common laptop paradigm.

All students new to ASB for the 2007-08 school year attend an orientation session with a technology staff member. This covers the basics of Windows and Office, document management, backup procedures, Tablet hygiene, Tablet maintenance, Tablet insurance, printing, unique features of Tablet PCs, and other day-to-day computer skills needed at ASB.

In order to promote mission-appropriate student behavior and teach responsible maintenance and care of the Tablet PC, students and parents should report any wear and tear not covered by Insurance or Warranty. This includes normal wear or cosmetic damage. For a nominal fee plus the cost of the part, the Technology Office oversees the repair. This practice also supports the schools technology vision and philosophy.

Another thanks to Lora for pointing to this site. I've been off track longer than I thought. :)
