The National Center for Education Statistics reports in Teacher Attrition and Mobility: ressults from the 2004-05 Teacher Follow-up Survey that the During the 2003–04 school year, 3,214,900 public school teachers who were teaching. During the following year:

- 84 percent remained at the same school (“stayers”),

- 8 percent moved to a different school (“movers”), and

- 8 percent left the profession (“leavers”).

Among private school teachers,

- 81 percent were stayers,

- 6 percent were movers, and

- 14 percent were leavers.
