| Re: ICR Recognition on Vista So this means that unlike Windows XP pro, handwriting recognition is built into Windows Vista, without requiring a tablet? That's only the second reason I have heard of for a business user upgrading to Vista, the first being that the TCP/IP stack has been rewritten. I've been assuming that the reason that handwriting recognition has not been released for XP pro has to do with either licensing restrictions ( to Microsoft) or a desire to push the tablet OS. I'm a document management system developer, handwriting recognition (for images, not strokes) would be wonderful. "Stefan Wick[MS]" wrote: > Hi Tony, > > can you explain what "ICR" recognition is? | Re: ICR Recognition on Vista Hi, well actually "So this means that unlike Windows XP pro, handwriting recognition is built into Windows Vista, without requiring a tablet?" this is not completely correct. You do need the hardware in order to invoke tabtip. But at least now you can buy a low cost tablet and benefit from the Tablet PC API.:-) Cheers "bradjensen" wrote: > So this means that unlike Windows XP pro, handwriting recognition is built > into Windows Vista, without requiring a tablet? > > That's only the second reason I have heard of for a business user upgrading > to Vista, the first being that the TCP/IP stack has been rewritten. > > I've been assuming that the reason that handwriting recognition has not been > released for XP pro has to do with either licensing restrictions ( to > Microsoft) or a desire to push the tablet OS. > > I'm a document management system developer, handwriting recognition (for > images, not strokes) would be wonderful. > > "Stefan Wick[MS]" wrote: > > > Hi Tony, > > > > can you explain what "ICR" recognition is? | Re: ICR Recognition on Vista No, you do not need special hardware to invoke the TIP. On a regular desktop PC running Vista Home Premium (or above) you can go to Start|All Programs|Accessories|TabletPC|Tablet PC Input Panel in order to start the TIP. Also I believe that Tony's question was mostly about using the handwriting recognition APIs (as opposed to the end-user utility for handwriting recognition). For the APIs the same applies as to the TIP: they are available and fully funtional on Vista Home Premium and above - regardless of the hardware you are running on. One clarification on the APIs: our handwriting recognition APIs are all stroke based, not image based. | Re: ICR Recognition on Vista There are some people (particularly in the other tablet pc newsgroup) propagating the myth that special hardware is required for tablet functionality. I try to jump in and correct it whenever I see it. This is partially the reason for the confusion and I'm not really sure where it originated since even Windows XP Tablet PC Edition didn't require any particular hardware. -- Josh Einstein (Tablet PC MVP) Einstein Technologies Tablet Enhancements for Outlook - Try it free: www.tabletoutlook.com "Stefan Wick[MS]" <swick@online.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:OE2kqFFfHHA.4136@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > No, you do not need special hardware to invoke the TIP.
