Gottabemobile points to this
press release announcing from Gateway will be providing M285 Tablet PCs to Illinois Technology Immersion Pilot.
There are lots of
details about the Illinois program on its website. What's particularly worthwhile perusing is the PowerPoint slide presentation given to the pilot schools about the program.
It's a little difficult to tell, but it looks like either Apple is part of the program or was competing for it. I'm not sure if Gateway will have an exclusive. However, you have to check out Slide 13 of the PPT presentation where Apple gives its reasons for schools to pick their MacBooks as the notebook of choice. Near the bottom of the Slide 13 (in the section titled "Above and beyond") check out the second bullet item:
"To better facilitate a wide range of learning styles and needs, Mac OS X includes InkWell, a handwriting recognition system fully integrated into the operating system. InkWell allows students to write with a graphics tablet and have their handwriting converted into text and inserted directly in their documents."
Sounds like Apple is trying the Tablet angle after all--even if the "tablet" has to be tethered.
