I'm sitting in the UMPC Lifestyle talk at Mobile Connections right now. It's being presented jointly by Microsoft and Intel. Todd, from Microsoft, is going through the basic features of UMPCs. He also presented a couple cool demos. One was a map app built around the Virtual Earth API that's tuned for the UMPC--by providing large targets, gestures for navigation, and ink annotation.
During the Intel portion of the talk I wish I'd been live blogging. They presented some IDC numbers about the projected market and how the UMPC market is anticipated to grow. Unfortunately, I can't remember many of the specfics. Fortunately, Rob (from Gottabemobile) and some others are video taping parts of the presentation so maybe they'll have the details.
In an earlier talk, Stefan Wick of Microsoft, gave an overview of the Tablet PC SDK, spanning from COM, to WinForms, to Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). People were most interested in a WPF video annotation demo Stefan showed, which is also part of the conference's Hands On Lab (HOL). The app allows the user to write over the video, supports timestamped strokes that can be played back as live, and enables ink to be persisted in a video file (WMV format) as ink. I'm going to make sure to do the HOL and check out this app. I'll see if I can get some screenshots.
