Smile Installing Windows Vista RC1 on a Toshiba Portege M400 Tablet PC

I've been using Windows Vista Release Candidate 1 (RC1) and Office 2007 for two weeks now. All-in-all a good experience.
I first installed RC1 on a Toshiba Portege M400 Tablet PC. The install process on the M400 had certainly improved over the previous builds. I still needed to have the RAID driver for the hard drive on a USB key to load during the install process, but that is easily solved. Here are some steps that may be helpful to those you considering testing RC1. Before you begin, make sure you have your existing data backed up. I recommend using a separate hard drive and not your primary drive with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. This way you can swap drives as needed.
  1. Plug Tablet PC into AC Adapter and wall outlet.
  2. Connect network LAN adapter, for activation purposes.
  3. Flash the BIOS to 1.7.
  4. Download and unzip the drivers to a USB key.
  5. While the power is still off, insert the USB key.
  6. Turn power on.
  7. Immediately press right arrow key and navigate to the CD/DVD icon.
  8. Open optical drive tray and insert Windows Vista install DVD.
  9. Click Enter key to select boot from DVD.
  10. Windows Vista install process will begin. Select language options, COA, and proceed as usual.
  11. When you get to the drive partition window, you will need to load the RAID driver. Select load, navigate to the driver location on the USB key, select KR10I from the menu. Existing drive partitions will now appear and you can create or remove partitions as needed.
  12. Proceed with the standard install, create users, etc.
  13. Once the basic install has completed, connect to the internet and go to Windows Update to download updates and a few drivers. Run the remainder of driver setup files from the USB key.
