I saw this comment over on GottaBeMobile by Sumocat and I can't agree more:
"Microsoft...has five SKUs for Windows Vista, not one of them tailored for mobile PCs. Windows Mobile is so desktop-inspired that the phrase "familiar start menu" is used as a selling point. Tablet functionality and the Origami interface enable mobility, but they are add-ons over what is essentially an interface designed for desktops.
IMO, Microsoft's unwillingness to tailor Windows for mobile computing is hindering UMPC and Tablet PC adoption and pushing Intel to Linux for the MID form factor, and that's why so many enthusiasts are hopeful that Apple will jump in and launch mobile computing into the mainstream."
What I'd like to see is Microsoft take Windows XP and replace the shell along with upgrading its network connectivity a la Vista style. It would rock as a Tablet PC and UMPC OS. Waiting three, four or more years for Vista to become mobilized is going to leave Microsoft further behind.
Why not use Windows Embedded, or whatever it is called now? For exactly the reason the name changes imply. It's an OS that's trying to find itself. We already know XP. It's tweakable and would make a solid mobile OS until Vista can catch up.
