Video Resolution Problems

I have been a lurker here for a while now. Tried using maladroits tips for dual booting my c3500... but thats another long sad story.
My reason for coming today and joining is when displaying to an external monitor. I like to use 1280x1024 on my external monitor but this stopped working a couple of weeks ago for some unknown reason. When I change the screen res from 1024 x 768 to 1280 x 1024 the screen area beocmes bigger but doesn't shrink down to fit the monitor so I have to scroll around to get to the edges of the screen.
I have tried using the vanilla driver from sis, repeatedly tried the updated driver on averatec's website.

I thought maybe the problem was with my monitor, i was running a norcent 17" lcd, so I swapped it for a 17" dell lcd. Same results.

Any one have any ideas for me?

RS

I would try to see if maybe you are using "mirror" mode. I haven't used the external monitor that much, except for TV out, but if you're in display mirror mode I don't think it will go over the internal display resolution. Unless it was working fine that way to begin with, I don't know. I'll try to duplicate the problem and see if I can work out what's happening.

What problem did you have installing Linux? If you followed my directions exactly and used Fedora Core, it should work.

How do I tell if I am using mirror mode or not?

Regarding linux, I didn't screw around with the image cd's i just used partition magic 8.0 to size my windows partition down. After that I followed your instructions to the letter. I used linux text=0x305, iirc it kernel panics with a message very similar to this.

Code:
....
Initializing cryptographic API
CPU 0: Machine Check Exception: 0000000000000007
Bank 3: b400000000000833 at 000000001e000004
Kernel Panic - not syncing: Unable to continue
I'm not sure if that has to do with video or hdd's not syncing, google hasn't been much help with that error either.

Ahh..."linux text=0x305" is not what I wrote. I wrote "linux text video=0x305". If you actually did use the correct command and merely mistyped it when posting here, then that error message implies a hardware problem. You could try downloading and running memtest86, or try adding "nomce" after the "video=0x305" parameter.
