Display Problems

I am having a problem with my C3500 display. At random times, the screen will go very dim (it's like the contrast has been turned all the way down), and the only way to get it back to normal is to adjust it using the contrast buttons on the keyboard. As far as I can tell, nothing I am doing seems to trigger it. Sometimes it simply goes dim, other times if I switch the WLAN switch off it will go dim, sometimes when I'm writing on the screen, etc. I called Averatec and they told me to untinstall SP2, which I did, but it doesn't seem to help. I'm not even sure if this is a hardware or software related problem.
Software installed: office XP, Pspice 9.2lite, Ad-aware SE, Sygate Personal Firewall, and PG V. 14
Can anyone help? Thanks ^^
