| Wireless Problems--Signal drops out all the time Does anyone else have the prob. that sometimes the card seems to just lose signal? I often have to restart the computer many times and switch the power (WLAN) on and off before I can get the darn thing working.... This Averatec would be out the window if I was certain about another Tablet.... :realmad: |

| My Acer has trouble connecting too. Mine is because a new neighbor moved in and immediately I couldn't connect to my wireless router. I had to make changes to get things working again. What router do you have and is it locked down so that someone else can't use it by just being in the area?

Well, I've got a Linksys (g) and I've setup the WAP to secure it, so I think that's taken care of. any other ideas? |

Check other devices - are they also wireless? Some devices that may prove troublesome include 2.4 GHz cordless phones, microwave ovens, adjacent public hotspots, and neighboring 802.11b wireless LANs.Another quote I found: Also, the desk, cubic, celling and furniture inside the office will affect the RF signal. The complex of directive RF signal and reflective RF signal will reduce the distance.Yeah - I know that the Averatec is G and so is your router but it is still a worth the effort to move things around. So, try to move the access point and see if things change.

| Check the power setting for the wireless card. It can be set to disconnect after a short period of inactivity, thus saving power. Usually it can be restarted by hitting "Repair" on the right-click menu for the connection icon. The power setting, starting from the right-click menu for the connection, is at Status->Properties->Configure->Advanced->Power Saving. There are three modes: CAM, Fast_PSP, and Max_PSP. CAM is constantly-awake mode, the wireless card never turns off. |

| I have a Dlink router and my wireless connection is rock solid, I have never had a dropped connection so far. Two things regarding wireless is, one as already mentioned, other devices interference, the other is make sure you have the latest firmware for the router. In my experience, in the past most of the problems I had with the router disappeared with firmware upgrades. Even if you just bought the router check with Linksys to see if there are any new upgrades, it never hurts. If there is one, the part that sucks is after the firmware upgrade you have to re-configure the router with all your, WEP, filters etc. But it is small inconvenience you would pay if it works! Or, you can be like my incredibly stupid neighbors and not do ANY configuration of your router, not turn on ANY encryption, leave the default SSID and NOT EVEN CHANGE THE ADMIN PASSWORD. In case any of you are like this, please understand what can happen: this allows anyone within a few hundred feet of your house, or even farther away if they use a Pringles cantenna, to completely 0wn you. They can set up your router to allow all kinds of open ports and install spying software on any vulnerable computers. They can allow remote administration of your router and basically control your internal network, route traffic any way they want to, even install compromised firmware. Even if you set a password on the router, leaving it unencrypted makes it easy for someone to monitor your traffic, sniffing out passwords for your email, credit card numbers if you do any online commerce, and create a list of the sites you visit (how do you feel about blackmail?). Even encrypted connections can be broken into with a few days of analysis, so really you should switch up the passphrase every week. Most routers allow you to keep a list of passphrases internally, for easy switching. You may say "Nobody has a reason to try to hack *me*" but think of it this way: though nobody has a reason to steal *your* car, you lock the doors and take the keys with you, right? |

Great points. In fact, I wrote this little post on whatisnew.com about securing WiFi. Mainly enable WEP, change SSID, change default passwords, and even the channel.
