| C3500 and.... Linux This was bound to happen soon or later, but no surpise, I'm working on getting linux usable on a C3500. Right now I've done little more than load up card linux and kloppix to graphical desktops (had to boot using framebuffer mode in kloppix) and installed fedora core 2 in text mode which wont' boot because I need to mess with the x settings. (Not having framebuffer mode apparently not only makes it so you can't see anything, it locks the pc up entirely, and it's an issue with the video card, not the moniter, since i can't make an externa moniter plugged into the vga work either). RaLink the makers of the wireless card include linux drivers on their website, although I have not tried them out yet. From talking to the people of lycoris linux, the first linux distro with extremly limited support for tablets, i learned that xstroke will be needed for the text recongition. They also have some code for rotating the moniter, although making that work with the C3500's rotation button will be tricky i'm sure. I've had some problems so far trying to get a good idea of what hardware is actually in this tablet, (when my best resource is the device manager in windows i know i have problem). I'll probably call up averatec tech support tonight and see if they'll tell me anything useful. I was wondering if anyone here either has had some luck installing linux on the c3500, would like to help me try, or wants to know how my effort is going. Just a few questions. You mean Knoppix? Have you tried Debian or Slackware? Mandrake? Of course, the best place for seeing a list of distributions is Ladislav's DistroWatch.

| yeah knoppix, sorry for the misspelling. I used all of those on my desktop, but am working to get redhat fedora core 2 to work on the laptop (I'd like to get my rhce, otherwise I'd probably spend the time to build all my linux setups from sourcecode). Last night I was fighting X over loading the proper card drivers, expect to complete that successfully tonight, was limited in my time last night. Chris Matteson chris (at) chrismatteson (dot) com |

Type "fb1024x768" at the boot prompt. Since the CD-ROM is a combo DVD/CD-R it's not very fast to boot up. But it does run. |

| mandrake 10 works fine I found this thread while googling for acpi setup info under linux. I installed mandrake 10 without a hitch on the 3500 tablet pc. the installer worked fine in x mode. sound, graphics, etc all works. I downloaded and installed the wifi drivers from the taiwanese site and that works great too. The only hitch was enabling acpi support since the laptop does not provide apm support for power management. So I looked up all the modules available for acpi stuff: $ modprobe -l | grep -i acpi then I added commands to load those modules on startup in /etc/rc.d/rc.local: $ modprobe acpi $ modprobe ac ... Now I can at least tell when the battery is going to die on me =) Standby and Hibernate sort of work in the sense that they complete successfully when you select the options. However the system does not start up properly after that. I had to hit escape on bootup to get the lilo prompt and type 'linux noresume' to turn off the resume feature for standy and hibernate since the system would keep trying to restore and fail forcing me to keep rebooting. For now I have given up on getting these to work properly. cpu throttling does not appear to be supported yet juding from poking around in the /proc/acpi/ area. I am trying to figure that out so I can get the battery to last longer than 1.5 hours. I will probably do a writeup on this on my website at some point. - nimret -- http://www.nimret.com |
