Several C300 issues

I'm on the IT staff of a small business. Currently we have 14 C300's. Out of these 14, 8 have problems that users are reporting to me.

So far, 3 of them have sporadic mouse jumping/clicking. One of them is only if you close the lid and use an external mouse/monitor.

4 of them will randomly stop half of the normal services, including workstation/server and plenty of other services essential to a computer being used in a business environment.

2 have the sticky keys issue.

1 has what looks like a "sinkhole" of pixels in a small area.

2 have had errors with the bluetooth driver and microsoft word trying to change normal.dot every time word/outlook is closedl

These are just the problems that have been reported to me. I'm currently in the process of sending the ones with problems back to acer one by one.

I realize the sticky keys, the sinkhole, and the sporadic mouse motion/clicking are all issues that will have to be sent off to be resolved.

The bluetooth error is correctable by renaming one of the files associated with it, although i forget which.

But the main thing I'm curious about was, is anyone else having services randomly stop on their Acers? Or any tablet for that matter? The C300's are the only ones that seem to be doing it to us. The C110's seem to work fine.

Any ideas?

thanks,

Tim

Troubles with c300 too

Hello Tim

I have an Acer Travelmate C300 and amquite fed up with it. The bluetooth is problematic. Having completely stopped now. The operating system reports it cannot find the built in hardware. Previously had to return for repair b/c of hard disc failure. Have had some funny startup messages recently. Also it takes an age to start up now - will have to find out what is hanging it up - sits with blue screen on startup for nearly 5 minutes.

Any Advice appreciated

Sandy

Hello,

I have my Acer 303 in for service at the moment. Sent it in beginning of December and it is not back yet!! They tell me they have a bit of a backlog (no kidding!?!). Had to send it in because of the jumpy mouse pointer issue.

Regarding your problem with word/outlook and normal.dot: I experience the same problem and started to live with it as I was not able to come up with a solution to it. If you or anyone else have successfully managed to get around this issue, please let us know so that we can start to focus more on the real stuff in life.... Thanks.

@Admin: I am not sure if the problem with word and normal.dot is an issue specifically related to ACER or if it is a software issue. Maybe you can copy this mesage to the software forum as well. Thanx.

Andreas

Acer Tablet C300

I've only deployed 1 C300 to my Department Head unfortunatelty, same issues are surfacing with his. So far, the sporadic mouse jumping/clicking...... is the biggest issue while docked with lid closed and using an external monitor.
Too bad because this was to be his primary PC and as it should by design. I'm more frustrated at the NON support and/or relply from Acer, too bad because I beleive we'll find a different Tablet to purchase. Which is why I'm posting on this forum, I'll update if I discover any resolutions.

OK.......... it had been mentioned in an earlier post, about the effects of closing the lid while using an external monitor and mouse.
My Mouse issue goes away when I open the lid while using an external monitor......... sounds like a BIOS update needed?

There are two issues at work here: the sticky keys and the jumpy cursor.

The sticky keys problem is solved in the latest BIOS update (1.08) from Acer. Just download from their site and install.

The jumpy cursor, however, is a hardware problem. It seems there's a component which gives off electromagnetic radiation almost exactly the same as if you move the pen there and right-click. It also appears to be worse when the screen is face down or for the first few minutes after turning the computer on. The only permanent remedy is to send the unit to Acer and let them install some shielding for that component. They have a great returns program if you're still under warranty. You're only out a little time and heartache.

Even fixed, my C303 still does the jumpy cursor on very rare occasions. However, it never lasts more than a few moments, doesn't impede pen use, and never happens after it warms up, so that's progress, I suppose.

As I expressed in one (of a lot of similar) threads here (http://www.tabletquestions.com/showthread.php?t=4089), I had my ACER C303 sent in for service because of the jumping mouse pointer as well. I had the same experience like Mirage but I can not accept the jumping mouse cursor as a status quo. The device is too expensive to accept a flaw like this. Acer should be able to come up with a permanent rectification. Would anyone accept a brand new car whose signal lights turn on and off randomly?

After the tablet came back from service I noticed a new flaw: The screen would flicker heaviliy when used with the AC adaptor. All is fine when I run the device on battery or when I run it with the port replicator and an external monitor.

Because of the continuing mouse pointer issue and the flickering screen, I sent my tablet to the Acer service for the second time now. I hope it returns faster than last time when it took Acer more than 4 weeks to ship it back.

I only see the jumpy mouse issue when on battery power.

When plugged in it appears to be fine.

Has there been any progress from Acer on this?

Jumpy mouse pointer... a problem I know too well.

I have it on several levels..

1. When the machine was new I complained to Acer about the fact that the pen cursor was extremely unstable along the edges of the screen, especially the hinge edge. This is an issue because that edge is where you find the Close Button and the scrollbars when in portrait mode.... these key UI elements were completely unusable. Acer service suggested that the digitiser unit, which lives inside the screen bezel, just next to the hinges, was giving off EMF that causes the jumpy cursor issue.

Acer's solution was to wrap the digitiser in a heavy foil shield to minimise the EMF. This appears to have made a big difference, and the jumpy cursor was almost, although not completely, gone. It is far more acceptable however. What I want to know is, why is this considered to be a modification? Shouldn't this be standard on all C300s?

2. The other jumpy cursor is when I try to moved the mouse sometimes and it "stutters", for want of a better word. The cursor jumps, or stutters, in its movement and usually resolves itself within 5-6 seconds or so. Very annoying though. It is clearly a design fault. Acer say it is just a software issue (my software, not theirs), and seem unable to replicate the problem. When I did get it to happen, they dismissed it as a minor thing and did not take it further.

It happens particularly when accessing the Start menu and its submenus, although it can happen anytime. I have almost learnt to live with it, but as has been said above, this is not good enough for a machine of this pricerange.

3. I am currently experiencing an issue where the cursor will jump from wherever it is on the screen to the lower right corner (above the clock) and randomly open the clock dialog. This has only happened since I replaced the screen hinge, and I am currently trying to trouble shoot the problem. It does not happen when I remove the digitiser from its mounts and move it away from the edge of the screen. I suspect the digitiser is very poorly located, and should have been designed to be housed elsewhere, further from the screen edge.

Chris
