How can I cancel an edit and discard changes?

How can I cancel an edit?

For instance.
Go to contacts, select a contact, and click Edit. Then select a field
and type a couple of characters, the contents of the field have
changed. Now select another field, and make changes, and so on...
Finally I simply want to DISCARD all the changes and NOT to save
anything. HOW CAN I CANCEL THE EDIT AND SIMPLY CLOSE THIS CONTACT
RECORD?

The "Undo" command doesn't undo everything. You got to undo one by
one, I did not see and easy way to tell when the undo has to be
stopped. And it is extremely error-prone, slow, and cumbersome.

It appears that it is true for any item that you edit. Excel, Word etc
etc, they all behave the same way. Once you edit, you have to save! Or
am I missing something so obvious?

BTW, my device is Cingular 8125 running Windows Mobile 5.0 ( OS
5.1.195 build 14928.2.2.0).

Thank you all for your time.
Tom

Re: How can I cancel an edit and discard changes?

Hi J143,
Menu does not have a "cancel" option. It has the following Remove
Picture, Undo, Redo, Cut Copy, Paste, Clear and Select All but not
Cancel.
Thank you for help.

Re: How can I cancel an edit and discard changes?

Since the edits are directly written to the database fields, once you
leave each field that edit is apparently written to the database.

afaik, the only option is to copy the record on your desktop to a backup
location before the next sync, then restore it after the sync.

With os prior to wm5, users had the option to set the "sync rules" to
allow a manual selection if the record was edited on the pc and ppc
between syncs, but, with wm5, I am not sure which record will take
precedent if you simply make a dummy edit on the pc before the next sync.

yes... we know...

forgot to mention... with word and other apps, there is normally a
"revert" option...

In word (at least in 2003se) within the document, it's tools/options/revert

Re: How can I cancel an edit and discard changes?

Hi Beverly,
Thank you for the explanation. Neither word mobile nor excel contains
Tools->Options->Revert menu item. The only close thing I could find is
"undo". I do not know which version of word/excel that I am running.
They came with the OS, I did not make any changes since then. BTW, how
do I find the version information about a running/installed app?

How about WM6? Does it address this issue? To me this is a big
usability issue and I believe every one would be wanting to use.

Thank you for your time.
Tom

Don't know wm5 much less wm6... perhaps someone else will post.

Until then, poke around the menus to see if it's been hidden elsewhere.

In WM5 it's Menu > File > Revet to Saved.

What device / OS are you running?
In all the dozens of devices I've been testing for work, they all have
Menu/Cancel just as J144 has listed.

Re: How can I cancel an edit and discard changes?

Tom - I just googled Cingular 8125 and see that it's a Pocket PC, not a
SmartPhone. You posted to the SmartPhone newsgroup (among others) and I
read your post while browsing the SmartPhone newsgroup, so I assumed you had
a SmartPhone. Silly me.

You might want to remove the SmartPhone newsgroups from your cross postings.
Try asking your question in just the "microsoft.public.pocketpc" newsgroup.

Re: How can I cancel an edit and discard changes?

Hi J143,
Thank you for pointing this.

Hi ClevelandTech,
My Device is Cingular 8125 (HTC Wizard) Running Microsoft Windows
Mobile 5.0 OS 5.1.195(Build 14928.2.2.0). Cingular ROM Version
2.25.11.1 WWE Dated 05/11/06. ExtROM version 2.25.11.102. I did not
install other programs.

I checked it again. Contacts/Notes and Calender does not have a Menu-
>Cancel option. No File->Revert to Saved either.

Like Todd and Beverly mentioned, I can find "Menu->File->Revert to
Saved" item in Excel and Word.

Thank you all for your time and help.
Tom
