Activesync error

I came accross this error at work:
Critical communication services have failed to start, reset the device and
start again. This person is syncing a Treo700W to a Windows XP SP2 laptop and
has been unable to sync since installing the DST updates. He says he has
replaced the Treo and tried 3 versions of Activesync (4.1, 4.5, 4.1, 4.2 is
the order he tried them in). I had him do a clean uninstall of 4.1 and
install 4.2, disabling firewalls, and switch from RNDIS to Serial USB on the
Treo, but we can't get past this error. The RNDIS driver installed correctly
and connected before we changed to USB. He has no VPN on the laptop. Was
there something I missed?
