| Storage card issue I just upgraded my WinMobile 5.0 Treo to a WinMobile 6.1 Samsung Saga, and for the first time in my cell phone history, bought a 2GB storage card. I'd like to store photos on it (the Saga has a great camera), but I can't see how to move existing photos to the storage card. In fact, I can't see how to move ANYTHING to the storage card, there doesn't seem to be a "move" option in the Win 6.1 file explorer, and ActiveSync (4.5, build 5096, on a WinXP Pro SP3 desktop) can't see the storage card. I have a lot of personal files I'd also like to store on the storage card, and encrypt for security; but I can't see how to get 'em there, for the reasons I described above. While we're talking about encrypting the storage card: if I encrypt the storage card, can I still back the files up to my PC with ActiveSync (assuming ActiveSync ever detects the card)? If they're encrypted on the storage card, will the backups be encrypted on my PC? I do sometimes edit my Word and Excel files on both systems, but this all seems to work very differently with 6.1. At one point the phone did ask me if I wanted to format the storage card "for use in the machine", but since I had already been using the storage card for awhile, and had loaded Google Apps on it, I said no; and now I can't get that command to recur. Do I have to take the card out and reinsert it? I'm willing to blow Google Apps away if necessary. -- hedera Nature bats last. |

| RE: Storage card issue Um, embarrassing - I found that ActiveSync DOES see it, I was looking in the wrong place. You have to back up a level in Windows Explorer to see it from the "device." -- hedera Nature bats last. | RE: Storage card issue After playing with this a bit, I do have some storage card questions. I've successfully moved my personal files to the storage card - this includes some Word and Excel files. I also (recommended in the Saga users manual) deleted the personal files from the phone internal memory after moving them to the storage card, for security sake. But: syncing the phone with ActiveSync 4.5 now doesn't pick up the files on the storage card. Looks like I'll have to do a separate manual backup of the files on the storage card. Security is good, but convenience is a high price to pay for it. Is it possible to tell ActiveSync to synchronize the files on the storage card? If so, instructions would be appreciated. I also use Outlook Tasks and Notes, and those seem to be only in the phone memory, not saved to the storage card, and I can't find a way to tell them to do that. I can tell Word and Excel to save to the storage card; I can't tell them to look on the storage card for files to open. Their internal file managers don't seem to see the storage card. Is there a way to do that? -- hedera Nature bats last. They can't be. PIM data (contacts, calendar, tasks, email) have to be in the main storage memory. Email attachments can be stored on the card (it's an option in the Messaging app settings), and you cn save notes to the card, but those notes won't sync. > I can tell Word and Excel to save to the storage card; I can't tell them to > look on the storage card for files to open. Yours is probably defaulted to "My Documents." The files on the card will have a little SD card symbol overlapping the icon. As to the encryption issue, storage card encryption was implemented to secure the files on the card because the card is removeable. The device itself is considered secure because you can pasword protect it. You aren't really supposed to move all sensitive data to the card to take advantage of the encryption- the real sensitive data should be in main memory, and the device pasword protected. Without a password, the encrypted data on the card is readable by anyone who steals, finds, or borrows the device. With a password, no one can read the data on the device, even though it's unencrypted, because they can't access it. |

| Re: Storage card issue Todd, Thanks very much for your detailed answer. I'll take a look at Live Mesh and see what it looks like - ActiveSync is kind of a pain. I had to put off installing WinXP SP3 for almost 6 months until they added support for it. You may be interested that I GOT ActiveSync to sync the storage card! It created the usual "<device> - My Documents" folder on my desktop, and I thought, what would happen if I created a folder under that called "Storage card." Under which I put the full tree: Storage card > My Documents > Personal. ActiveSync instantly picked it up and sync'ed it! I discovered the "All Folders" options, but the Office Mobile apps only seem to find files on the storage card if they created them. I created an Excel sheet to test this. I can open the files in Office Mobile by double clicking them from the file manager, but they don't appear as an option to choose when you open the app. My device is password protected - I always password protect my smart phones. Locks itself after 1 minute idle, too. So maybe I'll just move stuff back to the phone memory and use the storage card for app code and photographs. It's a colossal pain to deal with as I have it now! -- hedera Nature bats last. If you've managed to sync the Storage Card, I believe you may be the first! I suspect what you'll find is that you now have a folder called "Storage Card" under your My Documents folder, rather than actually syncing with your storage card. I think you've now created a folder hierarchy of \My Documents\Storage card \My Documents\Personal in main storage memory. > I discovered the "All Folders" options, but the Office Mobile apps only seem > to find files on the storage card if they created them. I can open the files in Office Mobile by double clicking > them from the file manager, but they don't appear as an option to choose when > you open the app. There's an issue with folder level depth. The file selector in the Office apps only look two levels deep; e.g. \My Documents\Excel is visible, but \My Documents\Excel\Personal isn't. Since \Storage Card counts as a level, any subfolder of \Storage Card\My Documents is invisible. Any file can be accessed by the File Explorer, of course. |

| Re: Storage card issue Todd, When I look under My Documents in the phone file manager, I don't see a folder called Storage card. The only Storage Card folder in that hierarchy is directly under My Device and has a little square black symbol by it. I really think I have sync'ed the storage card. Could I have a folder in main memory that I can't see in the file manager? After reading your remarks, however, I'm seriously considering going back to having everything but photos and apps in main memory! Especially the remarks about file levels. The phone will just be easier to use that way. Thanks again for your advice and help! -- hedera Nature bats last. | Re: Storage card issue Color me stunned! I've never seen anyone manage to sync a storage card folder with Activesync before (without third-party aps, anyway.) The test would be to create a new file on either the device or PC, sync, and see if it ends up on the other.
