Deleting email from server?

Cingular Samsung Blackjack WM5

Is there a way to stop the phone from deleting emails on the server
(other than not deleting them from the phone?

In Messaging under 'Tools|Options|Storage', what do you have set in the
"Empty Deleted Items" box?

If it makes any difference don't forget we are talking about the smartphone
version of WM5.

Re: Deleting email from server?

I have a PPC-6700 WM5 smartphone. Messages are never deleted from the
server until the next connect and how they are deleted from the server is
setup in the "storage" tab in the inbox options... not sure of the path to
get there on the Blackjack

Re: Deleting email from server?

A few points:
1) PPC-6700 is classified as a PocketPC, not a Smartphone
2) Only PocketPCs have the Empty Deleted Items (EDI) setting / Storage tab
3) Smartphone behaves like EDI = "On Connect/Disconnect" and is not
user-configurable

Bob, I'm assuming your email server type is POP3. Unfortunately there is
currently no way to have deleted emails remain on the POP3 server on the SP
platform. Rest assured that we have received this feature request in the
past, and we continue to work to provide the best possible user experience
for our customers.

Out of curiosity, what is your reason for wanting to delete mail from your
device, but not from the server?

Re: Deleting email from server?

Sorry to take so long getting back to you. I want my emails to reside on my
laptop (I never delete any there), I use my Blackjack as a supplement
reading & replying on a "spot" basis. Usually this is no problem as the
laptop is usually always connected at home & gets the email before the
Blackjack does but occasionally I'll take the laptop with me and I don't
want BJ to delete the email before it gets to the laptop. I know, don't
delete it from the Blackjack. That should not be a price I have to pay. I
had no problems just clicking the option "leave on server" from my Treo.

Hi,

I just read some of the e-mails in this thread after trying to find
info. on what I consider an e-mail glitch with the Samsung Blackjack.
I bought the phone a few weeks ago, and noticed that every so often,
when I connected to download e-mails, all the e-mails that were
already on the phone (and which were downloaded earlier the same day),
were delelted from the phone. After spending over an hour on the
phone with Cingular, they told be to call Samsung and gave me a "case"
number. I called Samsung, spent and hour with a Level 2 tech, who
told me I needed to speak to a Level 3 tech. I just spent another
hour on the phone with Level 3, and she told me that the e-mails do
not stay on the phone once they are deleted from the server. I have a
POP3 account. On my office computer, I use Outlook and in the set-up,
I do NOT leave e-mails on the server. Once they download to my office
computer, they do not need to remain on the server. After 2 hours of
experimentation, I determined that any e-mails to my phone were
deleted if they were subsequently downloaded to my office computer and
deleted from the server. The Level 3 tech told me that was a feature
of Windows 5 Mobile, and she had no idea if there was ever going to be
an upgrade. She also told me that e-mail were deleted from the phone
after they were read...which is NOT true (I experimented on that).

I can solve the problem by leaving e-mails on my server for X days,
but then 100's of e-mails will download to the phone when I connect.

Can anyone shed some light on this situation? I want to keep e-mails
on the phone (after I have downlaoded them) until I delete them....and
not worry whether or they are gone from the server.

I love the phone, other than this "feature" , which almost no one at
Cingular or Samsung seems to know about.

Margie

Re: Deleting email from server?

Hi Margie,

We designed the messaging application under the assumption that the mobile
email client would be complementary to a desktop email client, as it seems
to be in your case. However, we determined that most users want the mobile
client to be a snapshot of what they would normally see on their desktop
client. That is, the overwhelming majority of users expect that the same
messages would appear in both clients.

Another expectation that users had was that if a message was deleted from
one client, the message would also be deleted from the other client.

Thus, the design decision was made to leave a copy of messages on the server
and to expect the user to configure their desktop client to do the same.
Once a message is removed from the server, it is also removed from the
client.

As far as I know there is no workaround to achieve the behavior you desire.
I would suggest to configure your desktop client to leave a copy of messages
on the server, and to setup an automatic rule in Outlook to delete email
older than X days.
