| ActiveSync passthrough? does anyone knows how to configure a Smartphone (e.g. Cingular BlackJack) so that it will use the ActiveSync PassThrough to connect to the internet through my PC (when it is connected to ActiveSync)? someone suggested that i use a proxy, but that's not what i want. i want the Smartphone to use the ActiveSync PassThrough. apparently the BlackJack has no setting item to tell what connection should be used to access the internet (i.e. GSM or USB-ActiveSync-TassThrough). All the Smartphone emulators can connect through the ActiveSync PassThrough. is that not possible with real smartphones? any suggestion? |

| Re: ActiveSync passthrough? I can tell you it is possible, and I would have said default, were it not for your issue. My wife's SmartFlip just does it. Doesn't even need to be partnered. When I hook it to my PC for loading programs etc, I just connect as guest. Uses the home network and internet link just fine via Pass-Through. Most be some configuration issue but I couldn't guess what. I-Mate provides cab files for most of their phones for many carriers that you just run and it sets it up for that carrier. -- Sven MVP - Mobile Devices "The PocketTV Team" <support@pockettv.com> wrote in message news:Obll4PUJHHA.1008@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > does anyone knows how to configure a Smartphone (e.g. Cingular BlackJack) > so that it will use the ActiveSync PassThrough to connect to the internet > through my PC (when it is connected to ActiveSync)? > > someone suggested that i use a proxy, but that's not what i want. i want > the Smartphone to use the ActiveSync PassThrough. > > apparently the BlackJack has no setting item to tell what connection > should be used to access the internet (i.e. GSM or > USB-ActiveSync-TassThrough). > > All the Smartphone emulators can connect through the ActiveSync > PassThrough. is that not possible with real smartphones? > > any suggestion? > > |

| Re: ActiveSync passthrough? ok, thanks. so that's quite what i thought: it looks like a bug in the Cingular BlackJack, i.e. the BlackJack is not capable of using the Pass-Through. | Re: ActiveSync passthrough? I'd lean more toward a setting somewhere. Using Pass-Through is pretty inherent in the OS. Can you turn the cell radio off in the BlkJck? Might force it to look for another option. We are still creating a little network between the device and the PC, which typically is not on the same subnet your home (work) network is on. That's what messes with firewalls and such. Does Pass-Through work with other devices on the same PC? If so, then naturally you'd look to the device for the problem. There is the possibility that Samsung or Cingular disabled the PT, but I can't imagine why they'd go through the trouble. Can't imagine most folks would opt to browse the net on a 2" screen when within USB cable distance off a regular monitor and keyboard. -- Sven MVP - Mobile Devices "The PocketTV Team" <support@pockettv.com> wrote in message news:e5rFL5XJHHA.1240@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > ok, thanks. > > so that's quite what i thought: > > it looks like a bug in the Cingular BlackJack, i.e. the BlackJack is not > capable of using the Pass-Through. > > > "Sven" <sejohannsen********.com> wrote in message > news:ehzr4fXJHHA.4760@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >>I can tell you it is possible, and I would have said default, were it not >>for your issue. Does Pass-Through work with other devices on the same PC? yes, it works with all the devices i tried and all the emulators, too, on the same PC. it's not a firewall issue. the BlackJack always tried to access the network through its wireless radio, even when sync'ed. > If so, then naturally you'd look to the device for the problem. that's my feeling. > There is the possibility that Samsung or Cingular disabled the PT, but I > can't imagine why they'd go through the trouble. maybe they didn't do it on purpose, but they created a bug that prevents it. > Can't imagine most folks would opt to browse the net on a 2" screen when > within USB cable distance off a regular monitor and keyboard. whether it makes sense or not for most people is irrelevent. it should work, and it does not. > -- > Sven > MVP - Mobile Devices > "The PocketTV Team" <support@pockettv.com> wrote in message > news:e5rFL5XJHHA.1240@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >> ok, thanks. >> >> so that's quite what i thought: >> >> it looks like a bug in the Cingular BlackJack, i.e. the BlackJack is not >> capable of using the Pass-Through. >> >> >> "Sven" <sejohannsen********.com> wrote in message >> news:ehzr4fXJHHA.4760@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >>>I can tell you it is possible, and I would have said default, were it not >>>for your issue. | Re: ActiveSync passthrough? Not Samsung. however Cingular charges for bandwidth - unless you take a dataplan that brings your cellphone bill to a minimum of $100 per month - so they definitely do not want the phone to use the PassThrough. so apparently MSFT does not check that Smartphones should have the PassThrough feature working, as part of their platform validation tests. > Sven > MVP - Mobile Devices >> >>> Can't imagine most folks would opt to browse the net on a 2" screen >>> when within USB cable distance off a regular monitor and keyboard. >> >> whether it makes sense or not for most people is irrelevent. it should >> work, and it does not. >> >>> -- >>> Sven >>> MVP - Mobile Devices >> > > |

| Re: ActiveSync passthrough? Come on now. I've got an unlimited data plan with Cingular and it's $20 a month on top of the cell bill. I've got three phones on the account, two with unlimited data and it's only $120/mo. Certainly you can pay more, but don't count an exorbitant voice plan as the excuse. My T-Mobile with unlimited Data and Wifi (T-Mobile Hotspot) is only $60/month. Sure Cingular wants to sell you the data plan along with the phone that can use it, but do you imagine they think that disabling Pass-Through is going to force folks to do that? The point of a data enabled phone is to get the data at places other than sitting at your desk in front of your PC. I would think seeing what you can do while tethered to your desk and AS, would increase peoples desire to get that data plan so they could surf and stuff while out and about. And it's MSFT fault, if in fact Cingular decided to have Samsung disable Pass-Through? Which I still find hard to believe BTW. -- Sven MVP - Mobile Devices "The PocketTV Team" <support@pockettv.com> wrote in message news:eQnq88gJHHA.1912@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > "Sven" <sejohannsen********.com> wrote in message > news:%23tT0U1gJHHA.1280@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... >> My point there was that I wouldn't think SamCing would bother disabling >> something most wouldn't use much anyway. > > Not Samsung. however Cingular charges for bandwidth - unless you take a > dataplan that brings your cellphone bill to a minimum of $100 per month - > so they definitely do not want the phone to use the PassThrough. > > so apparently MSFT does not check that Smartphones should have the > PassThrough feature working, as part of their platform validation tests. > >> Sven >> MVP - Mobile Devices >>> >>>> Can't imagine most folks would opt to browse the net on a 2" screen >>>> when within USB cable distance off a regular monitor and keyboard. >>> >>> whether it makes sense or not for most people is irrelevent. it should >>> work, and it does not. >>> >>>> -- >>>> Sven >>>> MVP - Mobile Devices >>> >> >> > > |
