| GPS Phones hello to all! i heard that new phones will have a builtin GPS chip that can be used to get location signals. does this mean that a software can be written to get the gps signal and send via sms? have you seen any site that has some sample codes to get gps signals from a builtin gps chip? thanks |

| Re: GPS Phones all phones for the past several years have "gps" capabilities although they don't use the "gps" satellite system, but rather determine location using the provider cell tower locations. Unfortunately there are no third party user applications which can use this for your needs... the providers are using it to sell "services" and meet the current cellular 911 regulations. | Re: GPS Phones Not exactly, lol - I just got my hands on an HP iPaq hw6915, which is their newest PDA/smartphone; it comes with a proper gps receiver built in :) Hope this helps in some small way :) Roger Beverly Howard [Ms-MVP/MobileDev] wrote: > all phones for the past several years have "gps" capabilities although > they don't use the "gps" satellite system, but rather determine location > using the provider cell tower locations. > > Unfortunately there are no third party user applications which can use > this for your needs... the providers are using it to sell "services" and > meet the current cellular 911 regulations. > > Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices] |

| Re: GPS Phones >> it comes with a proper gps receiver built in :) << True... but your phone also has the cellular gps capabilities built in to the phone circuit and the op's question, while not concise, seemed to indicate he was asking based on the publicity surrounding that technology. To expand my response, I would add that if he wants true gps capabilities, he needs to assure that the satellite receiver is built in before he purchases. Thanks for the prompt. | Re: GPS Phones If you don't want a subscription based service, consider http://www.alk.com. Their co-pilot software requires an external GPS, but once you buy it, it just works--no more monthly fees. I've been using it on my Q for about 6 months and it works very well.
