Hitachi G1000 and GPS

I own a Hitachi G1000. I want to purchase Microsoft Streets & Trips with
GPS Locator.
I have a couple of questions:

() Does the Pocket Streets that comes with it offer Voice-Prompted Driving
Directions?

() Will this software run on a Smartphone with the following specs:

* The G1000 operating system is Pocket PC 2002 and that cannot be
upgraded.
* The G1000 has 32 MB of onboard RAM. However, I can use an SC card.
I currently own a 1 GB SC card with a lot of room.

Assuming that the software works with my unit, there is the matter of
connecting it to the G1000.

It has a Mini USB Port that is useless. My other options are:

* Serial Connection. This is proprietary, of course.
* SD slot thanks to the free SDIO Driver Upgrade.

For using the SDIO Slot, there seem to be options however given the limited
onboard RAM which means software/maps would have to be on a SC card, my
guess is they are not practical. (I am open to correction.)

For the serial connection, Pharos makes a Hitachi G1000 Assembly + Car
Charger for iGPS-360.
(Obligatory Link: http://snipurl.com/14q38)
Would that work with the GPS Locator that comes with MS Streets?

In short: Microsoft Streets & Trips with GPS Locator can be found on eBay
for $50 or even less, the Pharos connector runs about $35. Can I indeed
make those two purchases and have GPS navigation for driving with my G1000?

Pharos does make a kit that includes the Assembly, a iGPS-360 receiver and
their own Ostia Navigation Software. Since it's designed for the G1000 I'm
sure it would work however it is far pricier than the above solution and I
am trying to do this on the cheap.

S&T 2007 eliminated Pocket Streets. You'd need the 2006 version.

The G1000 is a Pocket PC, not Smartphone. Those are different versions of
the same OS. I did have S&T2006 Pocket Streets running on the G1000 with a
Holux Bluetooth GPS until last month.

I'd recommend you search on the news group microsoft.public.streets-trips.

I ended up deleting every software package except Pocket Streets and
MySportTraining just to get enough RAM to run a single county map and Socket
Bluetooth.

The G1000 CPU is slow by today's standards. You can drive as far as 12 miles
in city traffic between updates. It also does not support routes, just
location. The G1000 was a great device when it was released 40 months ago,
but I think you would be more happy to look at Verizon Moto Q, Cingular
Blackjack, T-Mobile Dash, etc.

That's fine. Older versions are cheaper anyway and perfectly functional for
my needs.

So I can use Bluetooth then, with the SDIO driver uopgrade? That's cool.

I searched for G1000 through Google's archives of that group and there was
not only nothing relevant, there was nothing, period. What am I looking for
there exactly?

I loaded most of my software loaded on a SC Card anyway. How much free RAM
would I need? Right now I have about 17MB of free RAM when I soft reset.

I cannot replace my G1000 now due to financial constraints. The other
options even on eBay all run a few hundred dollars and I got this for only
$65 or so.

I have to assume that if I do bite the bullet and purchase the Pharos G1000
kit which comes with its own GPS locator and cables as well as its own
software - Ostia - that it would work better since, well, it was *designed*
to be used with the G1000, presumably with the limitations we both know are
inherent with older technology. The absolute cheapest I have seen a kit is
$125. Anyone have experience with this? Maybe Ostia software is better
than Streets for my particular device... I have read glowing reviews online
from consumers who used it when it was first introduced way back when...

The G1000 does not have Bluetooth built-in. The SDIO upgrade adds the
ability do Input/Output (thus I/O) not just read a memory card. You still
have to add a SD Bluetooth card. My Socket card cost $125.

Instructions for Bluetooth and/or serial interfaces to PPC2002.

That's plenty of room for up a map of 3 TX counties each, with about 21
classes of POIs. If you use a Bluetooth SD card, you have to load the map
before starting Bluetooth.

I think you will find some serial issues with the G1000 that can only be
solved by a cable selling for $70+. I spent a lot of time and over $150 that
resulted in a map only 30x30 miles, showing the present location with a dot,
that could be in error by 12 miles. I think you are focused on price, not
function. I've been down the road you intend to pursue; would refuse to sell
you the equipment or support you.

I wish you good luck.
