long disance dialing woes

Hello

I have a Motorola Q, up in Canada. I enter my contacts in Outlook 2000 the
standard way, and a standard entry displays as +1 (204) 677-2256

I have checked the options boxes and the area code is in the proper box etc.

Anytime I need to call outside my own area code, I get an auto message fromt
he operator "you need to dial 1 and the area code". If I manually input the
1 and area code, the phone dials long distance just fine.

My only work around so far is to ammend my area code box to show an area
code of 1204 instead of just 204. Now, the conact displays as +1(1204)
677-2256 and dials out properly.

Is there something I am missing, or do I have to change each of my contact
to have the 1 inclusive in the area code?

Tx

RE: long disance dialing woes

I have never seen this before. If a phone number is entered in full
international format, and you appear to have don this, it should get dialed
correctly. Who is your carrier? You may need to check whether there is some,
perhaps obscure, reason that it doesn't support this standard.

But first you can try this experiment: Manually dial the number in full
international format. For the "+" sing, hold down the "0" key until the "+"
appears, then enter the rest of the number, including the country code and
area code. The hit the dial key. What happens?

Re: long disance dialing woes

Just tired what you said +1-800-514-3798 and I got the "I'm sorry, you have
dialed a number to which long distance charges apply, please ......"

And you want to know the strangest thing? Before this phone I had an audivox
pocketpc, synced with the same outlook address book, and had no trouble at
all.

Any other ideas? BTW, my carrier is MTS (Manitoba Telecom Services)

Re: long disance dialing woes

BTW - I just tried the +! thing with a regular cell phone and got the same
result. Same error mesage from attendant.

Re: long disance dialing woes

Try the experiment (that is manually dialing the number, inlcuding the +
sign) with a regular number, not an 800 number. Not sure if this will make
any difference, but it will at least eliminate the possibility.

The only other thing I can think of is that your MTS service may not be GSM,
in which case I'm not sure if the carrier properly supports numbers in
international format.

Re: long disance dialing woes

Makes no difference, and BTW, MTS is CDMA, not GSM, but the strangest thing
is I had no trouble with my PPC.

Only other thing I can think of is that the "my phone number" field is
wrong, not even in a phone number format - it is something like 00054069

Re: long disance dialing woes

How are you getting your contact info from Outlook to the Motorola Q?
ActiveSync? Are the numbers properly formatted on the Q itself?

Re: long disance dialing woes

Activesync brings them in - only difference between the Q and the ppc6600 is
that the Q neede the latest version of Active Sync.

On the Q, the phone number displays as +1-204-836-1234 etc

Even on the dialling screen, it shows as above.

Weird eh?

Yes ... got me stumped. It may have something to do with the carrier being
CDMA and not GSM. You may need to check this further with the carrier. Good
luck.
