| Dire help needed please. Hello all, I am the very disappointed owner of a Verizon (Audiovox) XV6700 and I have been having nothing but problems with the phone and even worse, the support offered by Verizon. When I bought the phone I had my laptop under my arm and in tow. It's an IBM T30 Running XP with all the newest updates and service packs. As well as a fresh update of Active Sync Ver 4.0 and using Outlook Express Ver. 6.0 The problem I am having is I can not back up any data and retrieve it. Repeated calls to Verizon, Audiovox and Microsoft have been useless. I am left to understand that the only way my configuration will work is to uninstall the current MS. Office and outlook and downgrade to Outlook. This goes against everything the sales rep told me and I can not get out of the contract and I need to find a way to back up my PDA as the unit is a pile of junk and it was misrepresented at the time of sale (I do freely admit I failed to research this enough but I had no reason to figure "current technology" requires obsolete software. Merit to say- I reloaded the PDA twice, hard resets, reset from Verizon, I am looking at handago.com for backup software but I really need to defer to an expert in this forum please. I am truly at my wit's end. Is there any way to back up to my 2 Gb memory cards and keep one in the safe? Is there any way for Active Sync 4.0 to work with this configuration. I am really in a bind and any help is greatly appreciated. Respectfully, Robert D. Fraser II |

| Re: Dire help needed please. Hal, Thanks for the reply! I'm running Office 2003 with Outlook Express 6.0 (All service roll-ups are in place) Also I failed to mention that I have also updated the Active Sync to ver 4.2.0 Why the heck would the most popular platform not be compatible? I'm as lost as I am mad and disappointed. ANY ideas to get me backed up are greatly appreciated. | Re: Dire help needed please. As I said, ActiveSync will NOT work with Outlook Express, that's why you get Outlook with ActiveSync. If Office 2003 comes with Outlook 2003, you should be in good shape. What exactly is happening? I have the Alltel version of the 6700 and it seems to fairly cooperative, so far. | Re: Dire help needed please. In addition ASync 4.x no longer has backup options... it is necessary to purchase a third party application to backup files and settings... if you get sync to work, that will backup pim data and files located in main memory my documents folders. | Re: Dire help needed please. So I've discovered, much to my chagrin. I'm coming from a Toshiba e740 which has a backup utility in ROM. Do you have a favorite 3rd party backup app? | Re: Dire help needed please. Bev & Hal, Gee, this just keeps getting better as I go. if I recall, Outlook Express 6.0 was the only E-mail client available with the Office 2003 Suite. (I might be wrong but at this point it appears I'm screwed anyhow.) I'd also be very interested to know a third party app to back up the pile of junk. Also, if this is the case why not just ditch Active Sync if it's of no use to create backups? Since my mail is hosted on my own POP3 setup (sans Hotmail) I have control over the mail domain and I only really want to be able to recover my contacts, calendar, and phone settings if that helps clear a path for a tool that would be of value. Many thanks again, Rob "Hal Hostetler [MVP P/I]" <hhh@kvoa.com> wrote in message news:erkuV3z7GHA.3384@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > So I've discovered, much to my chagrin. | Re: Dire help needed please. >> Outlook Express 6.0 was the only E-mail client available with the Office 2003 Suite. << Seriously, it's important in the ppc world that you understand the difference between "Outlook" and "Outlook Express" ...in this thread and others, it is a major confuser to users and those trying to help. These are two completely different applications which share only the name "Outlook" "Outlook Express" is a free, very limited, email and pim application that is bundled with every windows desktop os... This application _cannot_ be used with Activsync to sync pim and email data to and from windows mobile devices. "Outlook" is a full blown, propritary application that must be purchased , normally with "Office," and is a much more advanced application and is required to sync pim data unless you want to go with one of several third party sync apps (not recommended for first timers) "Outlook" has been required to for WinCD devices for around a decade... _and_ a legal copy of this $$$ program is provided free on the CD that comes with every ppc sold. If you carry any contacts, calendar or other pim data Outlook is essential for wmobile devices and it, effectively, functions as a seamless, transparent backup of that data. Sprite and SPB are the main two wm5 "full" backup options... google for POCKETPC WM5 BACKUP for more info. Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices] |

No, MS Office ships with Outlook, not Outlook Express. They are not the same product, in spite of the similarity in their names and user interfaces. -- Dave |
