How upgradable is Windows Mobile 5.0???

I almost pulled the trigger to buy the HTC TyTN, but then I read about the
announced OS upgrade aka Windows Mobile Crossbow for Q1/Q2 2007. Does
anybody know if the current range of Win Mobile 5 devices will be able to be
upgraded to the new upcoming OS's???

Cheers,
plo

Re: How upgradable is Windows Mobile 5.0???

Windows Mobile upgrades are issued by OEM (unlike desktop Windows where you
can purchase update and install it yourself) because OS is considered part
of hardware and has device specific part.

Even if device hardware is physically capable of running newer version, it
does not mean OEM would offer and upgrade.

You can wait for Crossbow devices to arrive, but at that time you would want
to wait for Photon devices to arrive and by that time you would want to wait
for...

So the point is: get it now or never. If you do get it, assume there will be
no OS update. Just like in case of your normal cell phone simply get a new
one in 2-3 years.

In general, I would agree with you, but it was Hitachi, not Sprint, that
provided the patch to convert the G1000 SD slot to SDIO; works fine with the
Socket SD Bluetooth NIC.

Re: How upgradable is Windows Mobile 5.0???

That's not an OS upgrade. The OEM point is correct. MS does not provide
upgrades. With carrier branded devices it is even more convoluted. It may
even be that one carrier provides an upgrade and another doesn't to the same
basic machine, like the Cingular 8125 and T-Mobile MDA. Even patches are at
the mercy of the carrier in many cases.

I would second the advice that you should assume that what you buy is what
you got.
