| active sync I have had the misfortune of drowning a cellphone and having 3 replacements in 3 weeks from Asurion. Because of this, I have had to use active sync many times and I find it like most other ms software. Very unfriendly to use. I wanted to be sure that I did not loose data from the desktop or cell phone being dominant over the other. I was not able to get to options until the synchronization took place. If i went to tools, option was not an active choice. Further, there were only two option, either the phone or desktop took precedence. I guess I am use to that old Palm software that allowed a third option and had both cellphone and desktop share with each other. Then I went to 'advanced options' and it was non-active also. Anyway to modify this software or is there any other software package that actually works, ie, Palm |

Personally I find Activesync singularly unfriendly- I'm happy with most other MS software I've used, however. > I wanted to be sure that I did not loose data from the desktop or > cell phone being dominant over the other. In the past, you could set options anytime the device was not actively synching- even when disconnected. Now it must be when conected, after the sync is completed. > Further, there were only two option, either the phone or desktop took > precedence. The naming of the those two options confuse a lot of people. Any updates made on either the PC or the mobile will always sync to the other, unless there is a "conflict," meaning the _same_ item is changed on both the mobile and the PC in between syncs, then one's changes takes precedence over the other's changes. For example, if you change John Smith's phone number on the PC, and his email address on the mobile in-between syncs, there will be a conflict at the next sync. If you chose desktop takes precedence, the new phone number gets written to the phone, and the new email is lost. If you chose mobile, the new email gets written to the PC, and the new phone is lost. But again, that's only if the same item changes on both. If you change John Smith's phone number on the PC, and Peter Jones' email on the phone, both changes sync to the other, regardless of what device is set to take precedence. Generally conflicts are pretty rare if you sync regularly, so the precedence settings rarely come into play. |

| Re: active sync Thanks for taking the time for a reply. Much appreciated. Is there a way to manage the software before a synchronization takes place. Or am I correct, that the only time a change can be made is immediately after a synchronization. | Re: active sync Sadly, no- you can change the options after a sync completes. As I said, this is a relatively new behavior. Older versions of Activesync (3.x) allowed changes whenever the device wasn't syncing (before or after.) Unfortunately, AS 3.x only works with older (pre-WM5) devices.
