| daylight savings time Could anybody tell me how to set my mobile phone (Windows Mobile 6.1) to NOT observe daylight savings time? I live in South Africa, where DST is not observed. All my appointments on my phone is now out of sync with those on my desktop (Sync using exchange server). Thanks! Jaunine |

Windows Mobile has no setting to observe (or not to observe) DST. That setting is integrated into the time zone selection. For example, both the London, England and Casablanca settings are in GMT +/- 0, but London observes DST and Casablanca doesn't, so anyone in GMT 0 that doesn't observe DST can choose "Casablanca" as their time zone. Similarly, you just need to figure out which of the GMT +2 zones on the device doesn't observe DST, if any, and use that zone on the device. |

| Re: daylight savings time To add just a little, Just select one of the other GMT +2 zones and see if that puts your appoints back where you want them. If not, try another. Changing the selected zone, doesn't actually change all your appointment times, they are stored in a universal format. The time zone only changes the offset used when displaying the appointments, so you can't really hurt much. As Todd mentioned, the differences in the options that are in the same timezone, such as GMT +2, would be whether or not DST is observed at all, or sometimes when the start and stop dates are. | Re: daylight savings time Thanks for the replies. That was most helpful. As soon as I set my phone's time zone to Pretoria (A blonde moment there!), the time was changed and my appointments synced correctly with those on my exchange server. However... Every time I set the timezone, about 30 minutes after, my the operating system freezes. I do a reset, and as soon as the phone comes on again, I'm yanked back to Prague Time zone. So you guys have any idea of what's wrong? Since my phone was on South African time when I purchased it, I'm guessing that this bug, causing me to have to reboot, to have caused the strange Prague setting. Most likely, your mobile operator is forcing the incorrect time zone setting onto your phone. Check if you can deselect that feature on the phone. On mine (an HTC Kaiser) it's under Start / Settings / Phone / Time Zone (Tab) with a box that you can tick that says "Automatically change time zone and clock." |

| Re: daylight savings time Glad you found a fix. Your problem was not actually unusual. It happens here in the US often as well. We have places where they do not observe DST, that are very close to places that do, or places that are at time zone boundaries, where the phone may be picking up signals from a different TZ broadcast than the TZ it is in. For those places it is best to not let the network set the Time/TZ. Unfortunately those two items are typically linked. I would love to see the ability to let the network set the time, keeping the time accurate, but not the TZ, keeping it from shifting all the appointments around. I expect the DST issue is when there are multiple TZ entries for a particular TZ, and the carrier is just sending the offset. I expect the OS probably just grabs the first entry for that particular TZ, which may not be the one that treats DST correctly for you. A few GPS apps I've used, (like Mapopolis and Pharos Ostia off the top of my head) offered a feature to set the system clock from GPS system time. That's handy when you disable network time updating. > I expect the DST issue is when there are multiple TZ entries for a > particular TZ, and the carrier is just sending the offset. That seems to be the case- my Denver (GMT -7)-based T-Mobile MDA used to switch to "GMT -6 Sasketchewan" during the summer, rather than stay at GMT-7 Denver plus the DST offset. I stopped letting the MDA pick up the TZ from T-Mobile. (Which annoyingly required a registry edit to make the TZ option page visible to disable it!) My AT&T Tilt (unlocked on T-Mobile) is behaving better, but I assume that's because T-Mo has probably "fixed" the issue to better support their WinMo devices. I haven't had to disable the TZ override- at least not yet. Arizona users (AZ doesn't observe DST) complained that their appointment times shifted an hour last summer- T-Mo apparently switched their zone to compensate for the DST offset rather than just not apply a DST offset to the timing in Arizona. |
