Windows Mobile vs Windows CE

Hello,
I am confused from Micosoft OS names. Could you anybody explain them?
For example: what difference is between Windows Mobile 6.0, Windows CE
6.0, Windows Embedded CE 6.0 and Windows CE .Net? What OS is used on
smartphone devices?

Thank you in advance

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 and Windows CE .NET refer to
different versions of Windows CE. Windows CE .NET was
version 4.2, if I recall correctly.

Windows Mobile 6.0 is a platform build on top of Windows CE
(Windows CE 5.2, confusingly enough).

MS Smartphone devices have used CE as an OS, with versions
from 3.0 up to 5.2.

You are very definitely not alone.

I'll try.

Variant on earlier response:
Windows CE is the base operating system. Windows Embedded CE is a
variant that is used in devices like traffic information signs (the
ones that announce delays, etc.), milking machines, cable TV boxes,
calculators, etc. Windows CE .NET is Windows CE 4.2; that version had
the misfortune of coming out when Microsoft was using .NET in every
name. Pocket PC (now known as Classic and Professional) and Smartphone
are platforms (base operating system plus tweaks plus hardware spec)
based on Windows CE. Windows Mobile is a blanket term for Pocket PC
and Smartphone.
