| several smartphone features questions Hi. I've been using a PPC (version 3) for a few years and now a friend wants to sell me a Samsung i320 with Smartphone (version 5.1.195). There are a few things that I find hard to believe can't be done but I can't find how to do them. 1. Tasks. I can create a task by typing its title. But I can't enter the due date or any notes for the task. I also can't edit the task title. If I edit the task on the PC and it syncs back, then I can view the due date and the notes, but i still can't edit them. Is this a limitation of Smartphone or should I be able to edit and how? I can edit detials inside contacts and appointments. Also, when I open the task list, there seems to be no quick way to get to the task I want to find. They are all listed in alphabetical order and if I press a letter to jump to that range, it starts to enter a new task. So instead I have to scroll down through the entire list (of about 200 items) to find the item I want. When I set a filter and sort by it helps, but if I leave Tasks and return the filter setting is not remembered. Any way for it to be remembered? 2. Notes. There are Voice Notes and Memo Pad on this phone but neither seems to sync up with Outlook Notes on my PC and also not in the other direction. Anyway to have this work? I know Smartphone comes without Excel and Word but I thought I could at least copy Excel dat on my PC to a note so I could carry it and view it on the Smartphone. 3. Quick List. There is a button on the right that pops up a Quick List. Any way to edit the Quick List items? 4. I notice that sometimes I have to press the left soft key to get More items on a given menu (like the Start menu) and sometimes I have to press the 5 key (like the Settigns menu) because the soft key is now Done. Why the inconsistency? Is this partly MS and partly Samsung software on there? 5. Regional Settings. This phone only has UK English (although it has US English locale). Can I change to US English in some way? 6. Ringtones. The phone only seems to be able to recognize a ring tone if it is in My Documents or on the Storage Card. I would like to keep them in a folder to reduce clutter in the top directories. Any way? 7. Sounds. For the keyboard, both the Tone and Click setting give an annoying falling tone. A click wouldn't be bad. Can these be customized? 8. Sound Theme. Any way to add a new one? 9. Picsel Viewer. Oh I just saw that this program can associate Word and Excel files. I'll have to try that. If so, is there a way to sync files between the PC and Smartphone? 10. I found I can set and use a Speed Dial for just about anything. How do I delete a Speed Dial or assign nothing to it? Sorry for the long list of questions. I didn't get a manual and my friend never really used the phone to be able to explain to me. If I shuold have broken this up into multiple posts let me know. Thanks! Bill |

One of the many, yes. Third-party replacement PIM solutions may help. > 2. Notes. Again, via 3rd party solutions (PhatNotes, IIRC.) > I know Smartphone comes without Excel and Word but > I thought I could at least copy Excel dat on my PC to a note so > I could carry it and view it on the Smartphone. WM6 phones include Word and Excel, older ones sometimes include a viewer, but that's up to the device manufacturer. At the risk of repeating myself, 3rd-party... ;-) > 3. Quick List. There is a button on the right that pops up a Quick > List. Any way to edit the Quick List items? I don't know. I use a Pocket PC-based phone. I rarely use my wife's smartphone, so on that note, I'll leave your more esoteric questions for those with more experience... |

Why the >inconsistency? Is this partly MS and partly Samsung software on there? I've seen the left soft key used for "More" only on the Start (Program) and Settings menus. On most other menus, each item can be activated by pressing the key corresponding to its position, and if the menu is longer than one page, the last item is commonly "more". I'm a developer and haven't seen anything enforcing this convention, so developers, including those at Microsoft, may well use other schemes. > >5. Regional Settings. This phone only has UK English (although it has US >English locale). Can I change to US English in some way? I just used google to look up regional settings in this newsgroup and got 54 hits. Most were irrelevant, but a 4 April 2005 thread called "MPX220 Spanish" says your carrier determines the list. Nowadays, several non-phone companies (HTC, iMate) are selling phones, and I think _they_ determine which locales are available on their phones. > >6. Ringtones. On my cell phone, my added ringtones are in \Application Data\Sounds in main memory. They were not recognized when in \My Documents\My Ringtones in main memory. I haven't tried anywhere else. clip > >Thanks! > >Bill > ----------------------------------------- To reply to me, remove the underscores (_) from my email address (and please indicate which newsgroup and message).
