Several times callers had to leave messages on the answering machine of
my Orange E650 because I don't get a ringtone when they call. I
controlled the ringtones with two other telephones which produce clear
and load ring tones.
Is there some preference in the E650/ HTC 710 that might control the
ringtone depending on the incoming call number ?

Go into the Contacts list and select the contact you want the custom
ring-tone for. Select Menu, Edit and scroll down till you get to the
'Custom ring tone' entry and change it to the ringtone you want. Click
Done and back and you're finished. Repeat for other contacts as
required.
