Office Mobile 6.1 Update

Thanks to the <http://www.theunwired.net> and Mobile MVP Arne Hess for
spotting this one;

================

In case you have overseen it (too):

<http://www.theunwired.net/?item=update-microsoft-releases-office-mobile-6-1-for-windows-mobile-6>

Microsoft just released an Office Mobile 6.1 update as a free download,
which is an upgrade to Office Mobile applications on Windows Mobile 6
Classic, Professional and Standard PDAs and smartphones. Office Mobile
6.1 now supports the new Office 2007 file formats.
Microsoft Office 2007 introduced new Open XML-based file formats for
Office applications. These new file formats reduce file size, improve
security and reliability and enhance integration with external sources.

To allow Windows Mobile users to work with Office documents created in
the Open XML formats, Microsoft has developed an upgrade for Word
Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile applications. This upgrade
to the Office Mobile applications allows viewing and editing of Word
documents and Excel workbooks and viewing of PowerPoint slideshows
created by using Microsoft Office 2007.

The Office Mobile application suite includes Microsoft Office Word
Mobile, Excel Mobile, and Microsoft Office PowerPoint Mobile for Windows
Mobile 6 powered devices, helping users manage and review documents.
Microsoft Office Mobile includes support for rich reviewing and minor
editing capabilities as well as support for rights-managed documents.

Other improvements include:

Enhanced viewing experience for charts in Excel Mobile
Ability to view SmartArt in PowerPoint Mobile
Ability to view and extract files from compressed (.zip) folders

Note: This free upgrade works only for Windows Mobile powered devices
that have an earlier version of Office Mobile installed already. If your
Windows Mobile powered device does not have Office Mobile applications,
this upgrade will not work for you. However, according to Microsoft you
will be able to purchase a full version of Office Mobile 6.1 online,
even if this option isn't available on Microsoft's mentioned website yet.

Unfortunately, they don't have one for GB, only US so I can't upgrade.
This seems a little odd.

What happens if your OS uses another language ? I use French, so ?

How much space does the update take ? Is WM 6.1 larger than 6.0 ? Do I
have to buy a new phone ;-) ?

Apologies, there is a French version and, indeed, many other non-English
languages but no English-United Kingdom so the install fails.

Has the download disappeared because the download link doesn't work.

Yes. MS pulled it before I got to D/L it as well. MS' page now says
it's "coming soon."

RE: Office Mobile 6.1 Update

I have over 3,000 phones deployed in the field, is there a .cab format for
this update so I can push it out via my 3rd party software? Otherwise I will
have recall all the devices just so I can load the wares from a desktop.
Seems like way to much work!

Re: Office Mobile 6.1 Update

There are a number of ways to extract the cab, the simplest being to run
the install with no device connected, then find the folder and cab
created during the install process (_normally_ under
progamfiles/microsoftactivesync)

You can then copy the cab file to the ppc and execute it there... see
http://BevHoward.com/bhhpj.htm#Cabs for more info.

_HOWEVER_ some apps may install activesync plugins during the pc install
such as file converters, so I would determine if that is happening
before going the cabinstall route.

Re: Office Mobile 6.1 Update

I found a universal extractor that will extract .cabs from
installs,.exe's,msi's etc.
Works good.
UniExtract-I just googled for it.

Re: Office Mobile 6.1 Update

Wes,
I personally hate installing ppc stuff on my pc just to get the
cab anyhow, so that's why I suggested UniExtract. It has worked for lots of
stuff for me, however, like Bev ssaid, maybe the installs add certain stuff
the cab doesn't (never for me though)

Update

Just downloaded Office 6.1 Update and ran it through UniExtract.
Worked great, it made a folder and extracted ALL the cabs. It actually has
them for both WM5/6, smartphone, and ppc.

Jeff:
Thanks for the help, I just downloaded uniextractor and the Office update,
was able to extract all the files including the .ini file. Have not put it
on my phone just yet to test, but I'm sure it will do just fine. Once I test
it manually, I will go ahead on load into my Trust Digital security suite and
push out to all the phones.

Thanks again to you both.

Re: Office Mobile 6.1 Update

NP-glad to help.
as a side note-UniExtract hasn't worked for every single .exe I've tried
but, I definetly think it's worth it. free!
and as I said before, I think it's a PITA to run an execute on my pc just to
get the cab anyway.
hope it worked for ya.
