| Re: Where are the Windows 7 Newsgroups There seems to be a shift away from newsgroups towards web forums. I noticed a diminishing participation in other popular newsgroups, like alt.home.repair. I will miss the groups, but time and progress moves on. -- Walter www.rationality.net - "Bruce Hagen" <Nospam@mymail.invalid> wrote in message news:eBR9lW2XKHA.1236@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... > "Walter R." <wr@example.com> wrote in message > news:O$8cIL2XKHA.872@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... >>I cannot find any Windows 7 Usenet groups. FWIW I find web based forums preferable because they are moderated. As a result they are not filled with all the spam you see in NGs. That's an improvement IMHO. |

Now if something could be done about it in these newsgroups, that would be the best of both worlds, IMO. I like the ability to remove old posts and just keep the current and active ones. I never keep posts more than 10 days unless they are still obviously active. Being able to trim is a real plus, at least from my point of view primarily as a responder and not an OP. Neat and trim. P.S. If you really want to see some morons, go to the windows.vista.general group. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail] Imperial Beach, CA |

Neat and trim. I'm even more extreme than you are. The only newsgroup posts I keep are those I haven't read yet. Once they're read, they're gone. That makes far fewer posts to have to wade through. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) since 2003 Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

It takes some know-how to find and configure a reader for NNTP vs clicking on a web forum link. |

That's > an improvement IMHO. Not really an improvement, killfiles can filter out the trolls, but from what I've seen in those forums. We have tons of people asking the same questions over and over, putting their posts in the subject and making the actual body of the message 3 or 4 words. The responses? They tend to be very much cut and paste form letters with a bunch of links and sometimes its not even sure if the people responding even read the problems or not. I don't see the forums as an improvement at all. But, there is nothing we can do to change that. However, some usenet servers carry a Windows 7 newsgroup that seems helpful. alt.windows7.general |

True, but even if Windows 7 *did* have a built-in newsreader, many new users, "unaware of usenet will just use the web forums." Microsoft could readily tell users, even new users, about usenet, and tell them how to use usenet. With just a little bit of help, almost nobody would find this hard at all. > It takes some > know-how to find and configure a reader for NNTP vs clicking > on a web forum link. True, but the amount of know-how required is extremely small. And there are web sites that tell you exactly how to do it. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP (Windows Desktop Experience) since 2003 Please Reply to the Newsgroup |
