Several weeks ago Steve pointed to the Tatung and the blogosphere is still talking about the system. For example, Warner is wondering whether these are UMPCs. Unwired even added a blurb.

Frank pointed to both the Tatung and HTC Athena and offered the term PPCS; however, he apparently did not realize Lora and I already separated out the small form factor (SFF) mobile PCs from other systems.

Here are the designations:

UMPC: Ultra Mobile PC platform from Microsoft, Intel, AMD, and VIA. A 7-inch touch screen with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition or soon we'll see Windows Vista.

SFF: Small Form Factor Mobile PCs from manufacturers who are using Windows Mobile OS and different screen sizes.

Tablet PC: Windows XP Tablet PC Edition or Windows Vista installed. Screen size is 12-15 inch.

Marketing people from companies do not always understand the distinctions between products. In fact, many are trying to use the success of the UMPC designation for their own products. Keeping the products separate though will help with the technical support all of the products will surely have. For example, I can't wait for someone to ask how to install Windows Vista onto the HTC Athena or Vista onto the OQO ...
