word document conversion (partially) stopped working

I installed activesync 4.5 and it stopped converting word docs from my
desktop to pocket word docs on my pocketpc. Word docs are not listed in the
'desktop to device' tab. I'm running XP pro and Office 2007 (with default
save as set to office 2003 format).
It will convert pocket word docs from the pocketpc into word docs on my
desktop.
Anyone know an answer for this? In the mean time I'm just saving everything
I need synced to the device as RTF.
Thanks,
Ari

Re: word document conversion (partially) stopped working

You should be able to open and edit word 2003 doc files and I'm
surprised if word will not open word files created on the ppc.

a few more details on the problem such as posting a small file created
on the ppc and synced to the pc would help.

Re: word document conversion (partially) stopped working

Thanks for the reply. I may be able to open .doc files on the ppc.
The specific problem I'm experiencing is that .doc files from the PC are not
converted automatically to .psw files when synced.
For example, I save a .doc document on my desktop in my PPC folder. When the
pocketpc syncs, it should be converted to .psw format and be copied to the
pocketpc. Instead, it is just copying to the pocketpc without being converted.
Moreover, there is no longer an option in activesync to enable this (though
there are options for converting file types other than .doc).
Sorry if I was vague in the previous post.
TIA,
Ari

No, I don't think that it *should* be converted. The PPC can read the doc
file, so why should it be converted to something else?

Re: word document conversion (partially) stopped working

Paul, thank you for your response.
Personally, I would at least like to have the option for .doc files to be
converted to .psw files when being copied from the desktop to the ppc via
activesync - just like it was before... I was using that option, available to
me, until it went away - the subject of this thread.
Is there a way to get this functionality back?

Ari

PS - on the matter of 'should'...
I suppose users could differ in their opinion of what is covered by
'should', as it seems subjective.
The logic implicit in the previous posting is that
1. If a file of format X can be read/opened by pocketpc it should not be
converted on syncing
+ 2. Files of format X can be read/opened by pocketpc
= 3. Files of format X should not be converted on syncing

If this is the case, then other formats which can be read/opened by pocketpc
should not be listed in the "Device to Desktop" File Conversion Properties
dialog. There are a number of such formats listed (at least in my activesync).
**If you're a microsoft actionsync programmer and happen to hold the logic
outlined above, please ignore this posting. I would rather keep the
(apparently redundant) functionality, thank you.

Re: word document conversion (partially) stopped working

His point is that you do not need it to convert, since your PPC can handle
it perfectly well as a .DOC file. Why do you want an option that
accomplishes absolutely nothing?

Re: word document conversion (partially) stopped working

The main reason is that the MS guys don't want to test a bunch of useless
options. It takes away resources from testing things that we really want to
have tested better than they are now! Anyone think of a feature or function
that could have used more testing before release?! ;-)
