How to add files to Windows Media player list?!?

This must be a stupid question since it seems like something that should be
very intuitive, but it's just not working for me... I've got a WM5 device
and a bunch of MP3s on the SD card in it. I want to add them to the library
or playlist of my Windows Media Player. I've been playing with the "library"
function and I just can't seem to get to the files. What's the right way to
add content to WM5's Media Player?

Mike

I believe the secret is in creating playlists. The stupidity lies in having
to go this extras step when all we want is to play the files straight up. I
understand your frustration.

Re: How to add files to Windows Media player list?!?

ppc wmp has become almost unusable with respect to playlists with the
last two versions...

The good news is that in addition to switching to a third party player
which most people do, you can create playlists using wmp on the pc as
long as your sync settings "maintain folder structure" and run a mass
search and replace on the folder names.

I'm glad it's not just me - I felt like a real idiot not being able to do
this simplest of tasks...

I'm not syncing with a PC - I use a Mac, so this won't work for me. I've
tried RealPlayer and I have the same issue - not at all obvious how to have
it include all the MP3s in a particular directory as a list from which to
play. Which 3rd party player do you recommend?

Try TCMP (The Core Media Player) - it's pretty good. If you use the
(free) iTunes companion SyncTunes then you can easily sync iTunes
playlists on your Mac to any removable memory card, such as your PPC
memory card in a card reader. This excellent bit of software will
copy the audio files over *and build a playlist .m3u file* that TCMP
(and most alternative media players) can read. Much better than the
frankly confrontational media player built into WM5.

In addition to ric's suggestion (which I agree with) know that playlists
are not magic, so that any tool which can transfer files along with
their file structures to a memory card and generate associated .asx
playlists will work with wmp.

Re: How to add files to Windows Media player list?!?

In Menu, Select the option Update Library. It'll ask you to confirm, hit
Search. It'll take a while, and you will be prompted to select Done when
done.

That should put your Storage Card media into the library. Note that each
storage media has it's own Library. If you have an Axim for instance that
has an SD and a CF slot, each device will have an independent library.

At the top of the Windows Media page that shows the Library and various
media types, Music Videos, etc., drop down the Library (little triangle next
to it). You should be able to select Storage Card. If you can't you have an
issue with MediaPlayer seeing the card. On the menu there is also a Library
option with a triangle that should pop the menu out to Storage Card. Again
if you don't see that, we have a different issue.

Incidentally, if you use Media Player on the desktop to copy, or sync, media
to the PPC it will take care of registering on the fly. Copying to a flash
card directly makes you have to update the library
