Homebrew screen protectors?

PDA screen protectors are godawful expensive for what they are.
I've been using overhead transparency material. Works great inside
but too reflective for general use in bright light.
What material works better? Surely the commercial guys buy
their bulk material somewhere????
Ideas on material for good home-made screen protectors?
Thanks, mike

How about "contact paper" -- the kind used for shelf linings and book
coverings? It's sold in rolls, in the housewares department. You might
trim it with an Xacto knife, or cut it to size before applying it. If I
recall correctly there's a clear type which isn't glossy.

I'd be *extremely* worried about using any kind of adhesive not
specifically designed for the application.

I've used home made protectors on my Palm for years;

(Sorry about the wrap)

Might work on other devices, depends on the screen edge detailing. I
haven't bothered using a protector with my PPC yet, as I figure it is
quite old already.

Light scratches matter a lot less than you think - you never notice them
when the screen is illuminated, only when it is off, so they are really
just cosmetic.

I'm wondering if using something like that would leave a horrible, sticky
residue if removed?

Probably, but most horrible, sticky residues will yield to a rubbing
alcohol-soaked paper towel.

Personally I don't find screen protectors that expensive- I troll office
supply stores for discounted close-out models designed for "obsolete"
devices with screens larger than mine, then trim them to fit. Two twelve-
packs of Fellows Casio E-100 screen protectors I found in an OfficeMax
clearance bin for $2 each got me through five years and four PPCs. I'm
now cutting down a 12-pack of Fellows protectors "custom designed for
Toshiba e310/740" I grabbed at CompUSA for $1 for my HTC Wizard.

I'm not a transcriber user, so I find a Fellows screen protector lasts me
a few months, even with a lot of soft-keyboard tapping.
