| Word Mobile 5.0 won't read DOC files RTF OK Hello Hopefully someone here can help, I've scoured the web with no luck I have a client that has a Treo 700w running Windows Mobile 5.0, they have their e-mail set to synch with the phone. When the user get's a e-mail with a word document attached an attempts to open the attachment or saves the document and attempts to open it, Word Mobile gives the error "A problem with the document was encountered and it cannot be opened" Word remains running and open but the doc simply won't open. This also occurs if you open Outlook on the users laptop, save the DOC file on to the hard drive and copy the file from the hard drive to the phone, same error. Now if you create a new doc on the phone and save it on the phone, word mobile has no problem opening that up, and here's the final wierdness. If you open Outlook on the laptop, save the DOC file, open it with Word 2003 on the laptop, resave the file as a RTF file and then copy the RTF file from the laptop to the phone, it opens no problem. Any suggestions would be great, Thanks Charles |

Sad to say the more complex the doc file the greater the chance Pocket Word will not open it. But first at least check to see what you available memory is on the device - if nothing else open pocket IE and delete all files, freeing up some room from the cache. Given the clarity of your post you may have checked this already but it bears mentioning. Good Luck. |

| Re: Word Mobile 5.0 won't read DOC files RTF OK xTenn This could be a memory problem, I thought perhaps the same thing. the Treo doesn't have any expansion memory on it. I'm going to have him get a memory card for it, see if that helps, unless someone post some other ideas. thanks Charles "xTenn" <xTennREMOVETHISPART@tds.net> wrote in message news:uoiBqmEXHHA.4872@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > Charles wrote: > > > > Any suggestions would be great, > > > > Well, you could try using a word processor that is better than pocket > word, such as Textmaker from Softmaker. > > Sad to say the more complex the doc file the greater the chance Pocket > Word will not open it. > > But first at least check to see what you available memory is on the > device - if nothing else open pocket IE and delete all files, freeing up > some room from the cache. When the user get's a e- > with a word document attached an attempts to open the attachment or saves > the document and attempts to open it, Word Mobile gives the error "A problem > with the document was encountered and it cannot be opened" First let's eliminate the red herring- I doubt "e-mail" has anything to do with this. Something in that document- a font, a table, a picture, or whatever, is p*ssing off Word Mobile so it's throwing a fit and refusing to open it. Oddly enough, there's actually a Pocket Word doc on my storage card right now that my WM5 can't open (same error) that worked fine on my PPC 2003 device. An earlier draft of the same doc (also in Pocket Word format) opens fine. I've never bothered comparing them to determine what's causing the problem (neither doc is important- they're very old docs I keep mostly for timeline reference- i.e. "as I said in the letter I sent to you Aug. 4th, 2005," etc.) > Word remains running and open but the doc simply won't open. Sure- you've eliminated whatever embedded object, font or formatting that Word Mobile is objecting to. > Any suggestions would be great, All I can suggest you do is to edit the problem document a little at a time, getting rid of any embedded objects or tables, etc. one at a time, then transferring the doc to the WM5 device and attempting to open it after each change. If any of those aren't the culprit then try changing fonts or attributes one at time until you figure out which change allowed Word Mobile to open the file. Once you've found it, take the advice of one of the world's oldest jokes: Patient: "Doctor, it hurts when I do this..." (makes repetitive arm movement) Doctor: "Then stop doing that..." You aren't going to change what Word Mobile can open, so you need to change what you make it try to open. Good luck! In some ways, I miss Pocket Word. At least anything PW didn't like was stripped out in the .doc-to.pwd conversion process. In six years of using PPCs I never had a file PW couldn't open! |

If IE is used on larger websites it is rather sloppy with its cache, which can leave very little memory for other programs to run. IF you use pocket IE to delete all of these files and you still have problems then the chances are (IMHO) the desktop features used within the document trying to be opened are not pocket friendly. Todd really did a great job of going into this, so check out is message in this thread. Good luck. |
