| Win Mob 6 & auto connect 1a) How do I manually connect to internet though GPRS without open IE? 1b) How do I get Win Mob 6 to connect automatically though GPRS if a program wants connectivity, such as Remote Desktop? 2a) How do I switch between running programs more effectivily than Start->Settings->Memory->Running-Programs? 2b) How do I close programs more effectivily than Start->Settings- >Memory->Running-Programs? BTW, I want to tell that I think Win Mob 6 sucks, and that I think MS should kick some asses for this poor user un-friendly crap. Sadly I've got no alternative. |

If you must do it manually, you have to hit Start /Settings/Connections(Tab)/Connections/Manage Existing Connections, then tap and hold on the desired connection and select "connect." Having said that, you shouldn't ever have to this, because any program that requires connectivity is supposed to initiate the connection itself without you triggering it manually. > 1b) How do I get Win Mob 6 to connect automatically though GPRS if a > program wants connectivity, such as Remote Desktop? It should do it automatically, assuming your connections are configured correctly in the Connection applet I mentioned above. Check the "Advanced" tab in the Connections applet and tap "select networks." There should be two drop-down "bars" on the screen. Make sure your mobile operator's data connection is listed in both bars. If not, set them both to use your operator's data and most if not all programs will initate a data connection automatically. If you're still having problems, let us know what program(s) is (are) not connecting? > 2a) How do I switch between running programs more effectivily than > Start->Settings->Memory->Running-Programs? The last several programs you've launched should be in the recent programs list in the Start Menu, so generally you just hit "Start" and relaunch it. Otherwise, try a third-party task manager. > 2b) How do I close programs more effectivily than Start->Settings- >>Memory->Running-Programs? The OS typically closes programs automatically if more memory is needed, otherwise there's generally no harm in just letting them run, as it saves time when relaunching them again later, since they're already resident in memory. If you want manual control of closing programs, then again, a third party task manager is probably the best way to go. Most WM6 devices have some form of task manager pre-installed by the manufacturer. If yours doesn't, I've always liked vBar (http://www.vieka.com/vbar.htm) In addition, many programs, even those without without an "exit" function, (like IE Mobile) will close if you tap "Ctrl-Q" (for "Quit") on the soft keyboard. > BTW, I want to tell that I think Win Mob 6 sucks, and that I think MS > should kick some asses for this poor user un-friendly crap. Sadly I've > got no alternative. That should motivate the volunteer community here to jump right in and offer assistance! Sure, WinMo has a few rough edges, and some of the design decisions seem a little baffling at times, but I find the power and flexibility WinMo offers to be easily worth the occasional hassle. As I often joke, Windows Mobile is the worst mobile OS available, except for all the others. If there's anything that displeases you about WinMo, there's probably a setting to change it, and if not, a third-party app to improve it. That level of end-user flexibility, customization and control is very rare in a mobile OS. |

I made sure both internet and work connection was the same before I did post, which means both say "My ISP". I only got this connection. I know it works because Internet Explorer connects automatically. Terminal Server Client (Or Remote Desktop if you will) does not. Do you know about a connection manager that will first try to find a Wlan, and if fails, then connect though GPRS, and at the same time monitor the connectivity so that it switch back and forth from a predefined priority list, and on top of that, turn Wlan off when not in use but still look for a Wlan in a user defined interval. Well, while writing this, I guess I should know I have to write this software myself, right:-? > Sure, WinMo has a few rough edges, and some of the design decisions seem a > little baffling at times, but I find the power and flexibility WinMo offers > to be easily worth the occasional hassle. *As I often joke, Windows Mobile > is the worst mobile OS available, except for all the others. * I guess we could talk for hours over a couples of beers:-) > If there's > anything that displeases you about WinMo, there's probably a setting to > change it, and if not, a third-party app to improve it. *That level of > end-user flexibility, customization and control is very rare in a mobile OS. Agree, there is no real alternative. We use handhelds for warehouse and delivery service in combination with Navision and Terminal Server and there is no other OS than Win Mob 6 (Win Mob 5 is not good enough cause of poor resolution handling) that can do the job. Win Mob 6 made it possible to go from laptops to Opticom handhelds, from one day to the next with full service without the need to develope a DB client. Cheers, Chris |

That is true and it is a big pain too. But that isn't the only remote control program with that issue. PCAnywhere for Mobile doesn't connect automatically either. What I do is open a browser first and have my home page set to a page without much text as in the following: http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?whoami=1&w= Plus the above page helps to inform me what my current connection to the internet is and that is helpful at times. > I guess we could talk for hours over a couples of beers:-) Sounds like fun. > (Win Mob 5 is not good enough > cause of poor resolution handling) that can do the job. > Win Mob 6 made > it possible to go from laptops to Opticom handhelds But it isn't just WM6. You are a lot better off with a screen that is 640x480 especially when using Remote Desktop. |

My work-around this far is to set the registry to let GPRS always be on, but it's not satisfying because I want to use the handheld to use Wlan when available, obviously because of speed. |
