Two for the road

In the continuing quest to find (and keep) ppc friendly info links, two
offerings;

==Mobile News===

Yahoo has radically changed their mobile news format... and while Yahoo
News is excellent for mobile use (clean, easy to read, fast loading) for
me, it became difficult to navigate. Turns out;

http://us.m.yahoo.com/w/ynews/all?__...b-sections-tab

Suggest immediately bookmarking it after you get there ;-)

You can navigate there, but the tabs are not obvious...
news->allnews->sections

TV Listings

Seems that offering mobile compatible TV Listings would be a no brainer,
but finding TV listings that display usably on a ppc has not been simple
since ppc's first gained mobile connectivity.

I have been using Zap2It.com for a while, but it was a pain, then
started using http://www.titantv.com on the pc for a while before trying
it on the ppc and was surprised to find that it actually works well with
pie view set to "default"

It works best to setup an account on your pc, then set your channel
lineup and set "full screen" "allow cell text to wrap" and "fixed height
cells" _and_ (surprisingly) with Titan's font setting set to "small"

For travel, Titan allows the creation of multiple "channel listings"
with one "gotcha" ...2003se's java limits mean that I can't select
alternate listings... would be interested in knowing if the newer
versions of pie can.

Finally, Titan uses login cookies, so, once logged in, you go straight
to your own listings.

Hope this is of value to others,
Beverly Howard

Thanks for the info and I'll have to try titantv now. And do you happen to
know if it list digital channels too?

I used to use http://m.tvguide.com a lot but gave up on it when I couldn't
go directly to the listing page anymore. Maybe I should just log into it
sometime and see if that helps.

If either Slinbox or Hava worked better with a VGA screen I could just use
the program listing on my DVR but they both suck when using VGA. Slingbox
sucks because it really only supports CGA on a PPC and Hava is too fuzzy
when using VGA. It would help Hava a lot if they had a way to lower the
number of frames per second. I called them about that and they told me they
have other things to fix that are more important. Weird.

BTW Hava has a feature that Slingbox does not because their laptop version
gives you the option to record either to a USB drive on the unit or locally
to the laptop.

Re: Two for the road

>> digital channels <<

Not sure what that means, but it lists all of the on air channels for
this area including the subchannels... then you decide which ones you
want on each channel display.

>> vga <<

VGA should not be a problem because of the range you have with both
Titan's font selections plus the limited font range of pie.

Virtually all sites I regularly visit work best with pie (QVGA) set to
the largest font size, so, I was surprised that Titan works best for me
with pie set to largest and Titan Grid Font Size set to "small" so that
means that you have three larger font sizes available to meet the ppc
VGA screen requirements.

Glad to hear this was of value to someone ;-)

Re: Two for the road (revised)

Posting this info has prompted me to take a closer look.

To date, I had always used the Titan page to see "what's on now" and the
discussion of the java limits prompted me to go in and try the hour
arrows and found that they also don't work.

Looking forward to someone with 6.x letting me know if they can navigate
this site.

Re: Two for the road

Took another look at preferences and Titan does allow setting number of
displayed hours up to 6 so that covers most needs and remains easily
readable using scrolling.

I'm using an AT&T Tilt with 6.0 and the arrows don't work for me either.

Boy I really miss PocketTVListings that used to sync two weeks of listings
to your device via Activesync, until Tribune cut off the data.

I posted a message to titan with details and asking for consideration of
mobile users.

Re: Two for the road (revised)

BTW, guys, do you know http://wwitv.com/ ? It's one of the best
international (!) channel / program listing. Most of the broadcasts are done
in WMV, which means they can be easily played back in either WMP Mobile or
CorePlayer.
