utility to manage pocket pc files from desktop{

Is there a good utility for managing Pocket PC files from the PC desktop?

Or, stated another way, is there a desktop Windows file manager that does a
good job of working with files on the Pocket PC?

I can do some things with Windows Explorer but not everything I want to do.

Hello,

You may want to take a look at SOTI Pocket Controller. It allows you to
manipulate files, edit the registry and stop tasks all from the desktop.

What do you want to do that AS or WMDC don't do?

My 1st example would be a search. Pretty basic function...

Hi Sven,

There are many things that I can do with desktop files using a good file
manager, and I'd like to be able to do them with my pocket pc files too.
I've tried to manipulate PPC files from the desktop Windows Explorer (and
other desktop file managers), and things often don't work out very well.
I'd really have to compile a list and add to it every time something
doesn't work the way I'd like it. Like sorting all files on the PPC by
size. Sometimes Windows Explorer even crashes. I've also wanted a way to
see which files are in device ROM, and which are in storage memory. Total
Commander CE has a "hide files in ROM" function, but I haven't found a
desktop progrm that can tell the difference between a ROM file and a file
in storage memory.

A lot of efforts in manipulating files on the PPC have had the purpose of
freeing up storage memory - I've wanted to move files to the storage card
or to my desktop. Also with the purpose of backing up stuff from the PPC
to desktop, or syncing.

Don't know about the OP, but for me, something that actually worked
properly would be a really good start.

Re: utility to manage pocket pc files from desktop{

AS and WMDC are not primarily file managers, and the PPC is not a USB drive.
These things are designed to do some syncing, and some management. They are
not, and will not be Windows File Explorer for the attached device. I think
it does a pretty good job of allowing me to move, add, delete, rename, etc.
Was just trying to find out what more 'file management' was being looked
for.

There are numerous great File Managers that work directly on the PPC
platform. Resco File Manager comes to mind. If the convenience of working on
the desktop with a real mouse and keyboard is desired, add something like
SOTI Pocket Controller, which has many features natively.

I'm afraid that's not enough reason for me to upgrade from XP!
