Activesync 5 Minute Rule

I don't understand why the programmers of the latest ver. of AS would want
to sync every 5 minutes. Is there a reason for this ?

Is there a work-around?

Tnx

There is - you can entirely disable it with the fake server hack. See for
example bullet 5 at
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/ind...&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
for more info.

Re: Activesync 5 Minute Rule

I did the the server "hack" but that didn't stop AS from doing it's thing
every 5 minutes. I've gone thru the exercise one more time and will "test"
the procedure when I get back to my office PC. (Set to Manual).

As I recall what I experienced was AS not actually bringing up the AS window
on my PC but AS still played the connection sound, every five minutes. (I
could disable the AS connection ((( sound ))) but that really doesn't
accomplish the task).

I'll stop back tomorrow and post my findings.

Tnx

Re: Activesync 5 Minute Rule

Werner,

This does not accomplish that task of... stopping AS. I tried with a dummy
Exchange Server connnection setup and I still got the connection "jingle".
This happens approx. 3 to 6 minutes. (It may be every 5 minutes, I'm not
timing by seconds).

Note: If I delete the Exchange Server then the "Manual" setting goes back
to the default. I had to uncheck all boxes and actually sync nothing on the
dummy Exchange Server.

As this continues with AS and nothing actually syncs I suspect AS is doing
something else besides syncing PC to PCC. Perhap it's checking for email?
Don't know but this sure is annoying.

Re: Activesync 5 Minute Rule

OK... So from searching around this is clearly a programming problem. I
tried Bev Howards suggestions on her web site, (the registry hack did not
solve the constant accessing). I hit a wall when trying to "Disable" AS as
the shortcut I created from the "Mobile Devices Icon" had no such Disable
feature.

Why the programmers dediced it was OK to waste resources... have a device
make annoying bing/bong noises every 5 minutes... and do routines that are
completely unessary... is a complete mystery to me.

I suspect this will be made right at some point but it's truly amazing that
it happened in the first place. Is there an alternative to AS?

<There goes that bing/bong again... every 5 mintues>

Re: Activesync 5 Minute Rule

Assuming you are speaking about activesync on the pc, there are steps
for shutting down activesync and rampimgr using a batch file at
http://BevHoward.com/ASync.htm#RAPI

Note that wmp will relaunch async as well as the presence of a connected
device... i.e. the ppc's usb id will trigger a program association.

If you were on Bev's website, how could you possibly mistake that
bearded face for a "her"? ;)

(I wish to apologize to both Golightly and Mr Howard for the above
comment, but sometimes you just have to ask ...)

You have to create a shortcut for the mobile "network connection" not
the mobile devices icon.

You need to click on the "<" to see the beard face... If you start at the
link you'll be left with a false impression.

Humm... that may lead me to another round of trouble shooting. I seem to be
missing the "Windows Mobile Devices icon" . Everything seems to be working,
without the icon.

I'll take a closer look at; http://bevhoward.com/ASync.htm#RAPI when I get
more time. I'm heading off to Atlanta and have hit a time crunch.

What I've done for the moment is just kill Activesync via the PCC. Rather
simple, three screen taps and the annoying noises every 5 minutes are
halted.

Thanks for the link.

That worked for me back in the 60's... nowadays it has the potential to
confuse even further ;-)
