| 'Live Search' Upgrade to Bing issue This is an HTC Touch Pro mobile phone with Windows Mobile 6.1. Until this morning I was using 'Live Search' with exceptional results in finding locations. Updated to 'Bing' and now it cannot find my own address. I write to inqurie if others are similarly affected and how can one reverse this upgrade? |

In my experience, the software version has little to do with finding anything, since the lookups are all server-based. The server seems to have a mind of its own when it comes to parsing addresses. Usually they work, sometimes they don't. I upgraded to "bing" last night, and my address worked first try this morning, but I had to put the full USA address- address, city, state, zip. "100 Main Street" alone hasn't worked for me in well over a year (it used to!) Now it has to be "100 Main Street, Anytown, ST, 12345" for me to get a hit, (and even then it's hit or miss!) An alternate method that's worked for me when the server was acting up, is to use the built-in reverse phone lookup. If I know the phone number of the person I'm findind, I enter that instead, and usually get a result. It's very frustrating, however, right after the program says "couldn't find any '13 Meadow Lane' near your location" to enter a phone number and instantly get "John Smith, 13 Meadow Lane"! I've also had better luck searching by contact. After failing to get a hit for an address, I've entered the same address as a contact, tap and hold on the contact, select "Find on Map," and get a hit from the very same address the program couldn't find a minute ago! So, give it a try later and see if it's working, and if not, and you really wan't to revert, unmunge my email address and drop me a line- I still have the last couple of Win Live Search .cab files I downloaded directly to my device, but I honestly don't think it'll help. |

| RE: 'Live Search' Upgrade to Bing issue I have a different, but related, problem. I have a Samsung ACE with Windows Mobile 6.1, and Live Search is updated to Bing. Unfortunately, my Bing appears to speak only FRENCH, even though my device is configured for US English. I haven't yet figured out how to fix that. Can anyone help? Thanks, Ralph S. If Live Search comes with the phone Bing will not remove it. You will end up with a Live Seach that keeps telling you about an upgrade and then crashes. You have to install another version of Live Search to remove the first Live Search then you can install Bing. Boy, I'm glad I didn't delete all my old Live Seach installation files. |

Boy, I'm glad I didn't delete > all my old Live Seach installation files. One probably could just delete the Live Search shortcut in the \Windows\Programs menu before (or after) installing Bing. The preinstalled Live Search files are in ROM, so installing a newer Live Search doesn't really delete them- it just redirects the shortcut the newer version installed in Storage Memory. Presumably the installation of Bing detects a user-installed version of Live Search and removes the "newer" Live Search shortcut, but doesn't think to look for a ROM-based version. I did notice installing Bing doesn't remove the Live Search cached files, which were taking up a few hundred MB on my Storage Card- I deleted the "Live Search" folder on my Storage Card manually to reclaim the space. |

If you ever use the "Update Library" function in WMP the files that Live Seach puts on the Storage Card really slow WMP down. Because of that the very first thing I do with Live Search or Bing is go into Settings and uncheck "Cache to Storage Card" then I delete that directory it put on the Storage Card. |

I never noticed that, but probably because I seldom use the WMP library function. I typically play media by using Voice Command, telling the device to "play (artist, playlist, or album)". VC seems to create its own library independent of WMP because I can tell VC to play albums I copied to my storage card before I've updated the WMP library to include them. |

Too bad Voice command doesn't work very well under WM5. About WMP. Once you have used the "Update Library" function you can easily search for tunes by All Music, Artist, Album or Genre so it makes a Windows Mobile device a lot more like a fancier stand alone MP3 players. BTW I haven't quit using my old Wizard as an MP3 player after adding BT Stereo to it. And you thought the Wizard was slow before. You should try using it when you are steaming audio to a BT Headset. Your best bet is to just tap the power button to turn the screen off and then put it in your pocket. I was showing off the AVRCP on my 2 year old Wizard to someone with an iPhone and he said he could just use his phone to change tracks. Next time I see him I'll have to ask him how he changes tracks when the MP3 player is not the foreground application. ;-) |

I understand. I use the update library function once in a blue moon, but not every time I add media, since it takes a awhile to build the library, and, as I said, I rarely use it without Voice Command. > BTW I haven't quit using my old Wizard as an MP3 player after adding BT > Stereo to it. You can then tap the control to select the next track, and tap the home button to hide the overlay. (This is from my foggy memory- my wife, and her iPhone, are out of town on business, so I can't test it for you.) > > |

And the worst part was WM5 doesn't give you an easy way to abort a call to the wrong name. So I figured after two screwups I'd give up on it for good. I have a question for you. If you don't use Stereo Bluetooth, but you use Bluetooth then how do you listen to your music with just one earpiece? Do you use "BT Audio" since that program will direct all sound even stereo sound to just one earpiece? http://freewareppc.com/communication...othaudio.shtml > I don't doubt it. I used to program UARTS and before the FIFO UARTS came along with 16 byte FIFOS the serial ports were extremely "processor intensive." > IIRC, you hold down (not just press) the home button, and a transparent > overlay pops up with iPod controls over the currently running application. > You can then tap the control to select the next track, and tap the home > button to hide the overlay. Then the next question is, if you are using Bluetooth for the sound will the iPhone stop playing music when you tap the power button to shut the screen off? I've heard it will but I'll know for sure one of these days. |

In Start / Settings / Voice Command select Phone / Options and tick the "confirm" boxes for calling by name and by number. Then VC will always repeat back to you what it thinks you said. If it's correct, say "yes" or "correct" and it will dial. If it's wrong, say "no" and it will prompt you to "please repeat." > I have a question for you. If you don't use Stereo Bluetooth, but you > use Bluetooth then how do you listen to your music with just one > earpiece? I don't. I use BT (only occasionally) for phone calls- I don't walk around with an earpiece attached to my ear- I use it when I know I'll be in a situation I need my hands free for some time. I use a wired headset (or, more often, an FM modulator on my car radio) for music. > Do > you use "BT Audio" since that program will direct all sound even stereo > sound to just one earpiece? > http://freewareppc.com/communication...othaudio.shtml I've used it for low fi applications like audiobooks, but not for music. I have a cheap pair of BT stereo headphones- I just don't ever use them. I just think stereo BT audio sucks compared to using a wired headset. It reminds me of those old IR wireless headsets sold twenty years ago- hissy, crackles when you move around, etc. I'm sure if I blew $150-200 on a great pair of A2DP 'phones it'd be good, but if I was that serious about quality audio I wouldn't be using a cellular phone (particularly an HTC!) as an audio player! > > I don't doubt it. I've been messing with my WM5 Wizard the past few days and all it has is Voice Speed Dial by cyberon but I know what you are talking about and that setting seems to be the default for "Voice Command." I would probably use Voice Command a lot more on my PPC that has it if it didn't shove the programs it ran into the "Recent Programs" list. I wish there was a way to remove that "Recent Programs" list all together. BTW I use a program called "launcher" to run my apps since it doesn't clutter up the "Recent Programs" list. http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/cestuff.html FYI my "Start" menu consist of Today, Recent Programs (greyed out), Programs and Settings and that is the way I like to leave it especially since I launch my favorite programs with one tap and the other programs with two taps. Oh yeah, I know there is a way to clear the "Recent Programs" list but I'll only do that when I have something in that list. http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/raj/ClearRecent.html > I don't. So I decided to go back to the cassette adapter and live with the tape hiss over the FM with the lack of frequency response. But I have seen one Bluetooth to FM modulator that had the same frequency response as a direct connection but it didn't transmit FM in Stereo so I returned it. http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/s...8&phoneId=4887 If the above link doesn't work just go to vzw.com and search for T505. Again, the T505 sounded great until I pulled out sound clip that has near total separation of left and right channels then I noticed there was no stereo with the T505. But, I'd be willing to try another FM Modulator since I've recently seen the T505 has great frequency response but no Stereo. Got any ideas? > I have a cheap pair of BT stereo headphones- I just don't ever use them. > I just think stereo BT audio sucks compared to using a wired headset. It's marginally useful, and takes up otherwise unused scren real estate. I see no advantage in the start menu only droppng down to cover 1/3 of the screen length. Regardless of my feelings about it, though, I know of no way to remove it permanently, sorry. > > I don't. I've been through quite a few modulators- most have horrible frequency response. I got lucky and found a pretty decent one by the (good quality but way overpriced) "Monster Cable" folks on clearance for 75% off because it had the misfortune to be labeled in big letters "Works with Zune!" and ended up on a clearance rack of Zune accessories (at Staples of all places!) > But I have seen one Bluetooth to FM modulator that had the same frequency > response as a direct connection but it didn't transmit FM in Stereo so I > returned it. > http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/s...accessoryDetai lsByAccessoryAndPhone&accessoryId=68588&phoneId=48 87 > > If the above link doesn't work just go to vzw.com and search for T505. > Again, the T505 sounded great until I pulled out sound clip that has near > total separation of left and right channels then I noticed there was no > stereo with the T505. > > But, I'd be willing to try another FM Modulator since I've recently seen the > T505 has great frequency response but no Stereo. Got any ideas? Depends how critical you are- if my car had a tape deck I'd probably use a cassette adaptor! I have very litle trouble finding modulators that reproduce the low end- the high is usually the problem- they tend to rolloff far below FM's 15khz limit. The Monster Cable unit is decent, and I have a Griffin that's not quite as good, but acceptable. Hopefully my next car will have a direct cable connection (aux jack) like my wife's and I'll be done with it. > > No idea- my wife's iPhone 2G doesn't support A2DP. > > That tells me she has the very first version of the iPhone since that is the > only one that can't do A2DP after upgrading to OS 3.0. You are right and after thinking about it was the higher frequencies that were lost with the FM Transmitter I bought. It was a cheap BT Stereo receiver that lost the lower range but it was still acceptable for using with a Slingplayer. It makes me think the Base was turned down on purpose just to make the battery last longer. > The Monster Cable unit is decent, and I have a Griffin > that's not quite as good, but acceptable.
